The role of human outdoor recreation in shaping patterns of grizzly bear-black bear co-occurrence

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Species’ distributions are influenced by a combination of landscape variables and biotic interactions with other species, including people. Grizzly bears and black bears are sympatric, competing omnivores that also share habitats with human ...

Mechanically Tunable Bone Scaffolds: In Vivo Hardening of 3D‐Printed Calcium Phosphate/Polycaprolactone Inks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 3D bone scaffold with osteogenic properties and capable of hardening in vivo is developed. The scaffold is implanted in a ductile state, and a phase transformation of the ceramic induces the stiffening and strengthening of the scaffold in vivo. Abstract Calcium phosphate 3D printing has revolutionized customized bone grafting.

Mammal responses to human recreation depend on landscape context.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
Rapid growth in outdoor recreation may have important and varied effects on terrestrial mammal communities. Few studies have investigated factors influencing variation in observed responses of multiple mammal species to recreation.

Bicontinuous Microarchitected Scaffolds Provide Topographic Cues That Govern Neuronal Behavior and Maturation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A scalable biomimetic platform transforms bioinert poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate into neuroinstructive matrices via integrating solvent transfer‐induced phase separation, microfluidics, and 3D bioprinting. Bicontinuous, hyperbolically curved microporous networks embedded within a fibrous construct elicit rapid adhesion, robust proliferation, and ...

Mimicking Synaptic Plasticity: Optoionic MoS2 Memory Powered by Biopolymer Hydrogels as a Dynamic Cations Reservoir

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Janus (MoS2) transistors functionalized with sodium alginate (SA) and poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF‐TrFE)] exhibit persistent photo‐induced ionic gating, driven by dynamic cation migration at the hybrid interface. This ionic mechanism enables finely tunable photoconductivity and emulates key synaptic plasticity behaviors ...

Quantifying impacts of recreation on elk (Cervus canadensis) using novel modeling approaches

open access: yesEcosphere
Recreation is known to impact wildlife by displacing and sometimes contributing to the extirpation of sensitive species, underscoring a need for policies that balance wildlife and recreation. This is especially pressing when Indigenous rights necessitate
