Tympanic Membrane Temperatures Compared to Rectal and Oral Temperatures
Clinical Pediatrics, 1991One hundred thirty-seven children at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation were enrolled in a study comparing the accuracy and acceptability of tympanic membrane temperatures taken with Thermoscan® to rectal or oral temperatures taken by IVAC® electronic thermometers. The mean age of the rectal/ear group was 1.2 ± 0.86 years (range 0.08- 5.0 years) with 22

Intramuscular, Rectal and Oesophageal Temperature During Exercise
Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, 1962AbstractTemperature recordings were made from the vastus lateralis of the m. quadriceps femoris, from the m. biceps brachii, from oesophagus and from rectum, before, during, and after exercise on a bicycle ergometer, using the loads of 900, 1,200 and 1,500 kpm/min. Three adult males served as subjects.

When body temperature changes, does rectal temperature lag?
The Journal of Pediatrics, 2004By using temporal artery and rectal thermometers, we followed temperatures in 45 febrile (>38.5 degrees C) infants given an antipyretic drug. Sixty and 90 minutes after drug administration, temporal artery temperatures had decreased significantly more than rectal temperatures.

Rectal and rectal vs. esophageal temperatures in paraplegic men during prolonged exercise
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1988This study investigated the rectal (Tre), esophageal (Tes), and skin (Tsk) temperature changes in a group of trained traumatic paraplegic men pushing their own wheelchairs on a motor-driven treadmill for a prolonged period in a neutral environment. There were two experiments. The first experiment (Tre and Tsk) involved a homogeneous group (T10-T12/L3)

Displacements of rectal temperature modify behavioral thermoregulation
Physiology & Behavior, 1971Abstract During behavioral thermoregulation, the temperature of the body core rises (or falls) in response to cooling (or warming) the medial preoptic area of the hypothalamus. Brief thermal displacements of the deep viscera of squirrel monkeys, accomplished via a rectal thermode, stimulate behavioral alterations of skin temperature in similar ...

[Body temperature measurement. Rectal--oral?].
Ugeskrift for laeger, 1990The reliability of daily routine oral temperature measured by the nursing staff with an electronic thermometer was tested by comparing the measurements with rectal temperature measured with a mercury thermometer. In each patient, rectal temperature was measured by the author just after the oral temperature measurement.
