Winter-active spiders (Clubiona) have a hyperactive antifreeze protein with a unique beta-solenoid fold. [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS J
Antifreeze proteins from winter‐active spiders were purified using their affinity for ice. After LC–MSMS characterization, corresponding transcripts were identified. The antifreeze protein folds as a β‐solenoid with a large flat ice‐binding site on one surface and can bind to ice crystals and prevent their growth at −4 °C.

Self-Inductance of the Circular Coils of the Rectangular Cross-Section with the Radial and Azimuthal Current Densities

open access: yesPhysics, 2020
In this paper, we give new formulas for calculating the self-inductance for circular coils of the rectangular cross-sections with the radial and the azimuthal current densities.

D0 Solenoid Upgrade Project: Rectangular Liquid Helium Tube, Miscellaneous Information [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
This engineering note contains miscellaneous information about the rectangular liquid helium supply tube for the D-Zero solenoid. The information is fairly superficial, but could be used as a starting point for a future engineer who is going to specify and puchase the tubing.

Concave Contact Geometry for Enhanced Sealing and Structural Integrity in Ultra-High Pressure Hydrogen Solenoid Valves

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Ultra-high-pressure hydrogen solenoid valves face a fundamental design challenge of operating across a wide pressure range from 2 MPa to 87.5 MPa. To address the conflicting requirements of effective sealing at low pressures and structural integrity at ...

TWISTER (Twente water injection system for turbulence experimental research): a jet array in the Twente water tunnel for generating strong turbulence using four-dimensional gradient noise. [PDF]

open access: yesExp Fluids
We present a newly constructed jet array with a novel driving scheme for turbulence generation in a vertical water tunnel and measurements of the turbulent flow this jet array establishes.

Calculation of radial magnetic fields for axisymmetric solenoids with rectangular cross section [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Physics, 1973
The ratio of maximum radial field to maximum axial field has been calculated numerically for axisymmetric solenoids of rectangular cross section and constant current density over a wide range of coil configurations. It is also shown that for a certain range of coil shapes the maximum modulus of the magnetic field occurs on the end faces of the windings.

Finite element simulation and structure optimization of HTS solenoid

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2022
When the current passing through a high temperature superconducting (HTS) coil that exceeds a critical value, the properties of the materials which make up the coil will fail, generating large amounts of heat and even causing serious accidents. Aiming at
