Endorectal repair of rectocele revisited

Transanal repair of rectocele involving the suprasphincteric portion of the rectovaginal septum has been shown to provide excellent results in up to 90 per cent of cases. Selection of patients suitable for repair is important. Rectocele with concomitant cystocele is best repaired transvaginally.

A rectocele is a herniation of the anterior rectal wall into the posterior wall of the vagina. It is an acquired condition. This herniation begins as a gradual thinning of the rectovaginal septum, first noticeable just above the anal sphincter, and may extend as far as the rectovaginal pouch (Douglas cul-de-sac).
