Acta Radiologica. Diagnosis, 1983
Two cases of barytoma of the rectum in a 33-year-old female and an 81-year-old male are presented. The cases were detected 4 1/2 and 3 months, respectively, after a barium enema. The morphologic, histochemical and radiologic findings are described. The pathogenesis and the differential diagnosis are then discussed in the light of the literature.

A 46‐year‐old man with a suspected malignant submucosal tumor received a transabdominoperineal rectal amputation. The histologic diagnosis was xanthogranuloma. The differentiation of xanthogranuloma from malignant fibrous histiocytoma and other histiocytic tumors is difficult in the preoperative stage.

There are many procedures which can be utilized in the treatment of procidentia of the rectum. The age and physical condition of the patient are important factors to be considered when making the choice of the procedure. The abdominal approach is favored by us in treatment of healthy, young adults.

We have reported a case of leiomyosarcoma of the rectum. These tumors comprise 0.1% of all rectal tumors, with about 100 cases having been reported. Symptomatology is nonspecific; digital examination is the most effective method of detection. Local surgical excision is as effective as abdominoperineal resection.
