Land use history and landscape forest cover determine tropical forest recovery

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 10, Page 2365-2381, October 2024.
Both a higher land use intensity and fragmented forest landscape decreases the speed of forest recovery, indicating that human actions and landscape transformation shape the course of succession. Restoration in fragmented forest landscapes through natural regeneration is more suitable in areas with low previous land use intensity, higher forest ...

Las políticas públicas de la restauración ambiental en México: limitantes, avances, rezagos y retos

open access: yesBotan‪ical Sciences, 2007
A pesar del profundo deterioro de los ecosistemas naturales mexicanos y de los efectos negativos que éstos generan en la calidad de vida de la población, la restauración ambiental no se ha convertido en una política pública prioritaria.

Viticulture and the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP): Historical overview, current situation and future perspective

open access: yesJournal of Sustainable Agriculture and Environment, Volume 3, Issue 2, June 2024.
In this article, we provide an overview of the historical evolution of viticulture in Europe from its origins to the present, and identify appropriate farming practices to accomplish sustainability requirements of the new CAP. We propose integrating organic management strategies together with historical practices developed by ancient cultures to meet ...

Precipitation seasonality and soil texture interact to shape dryland recovery from severe disturbance

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 6, Page 1356-1368, June 2024.
This study examines disturbed vegetation inside, and undisturbed vegetation adjacent to, 5600+ km of natural gas pipelines to understand patterns of NPP and shrub cover recovery in drylands. The authors found that NPP recovery was uncommon, with 58% of sites showing a plateau trajectory in recovery. Median time for shrub cover recovery was 83 years and

Systematic nature positive markets

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 3, June 2024.
Abstract Environmental markets are a rapidly emerging tool to mobilize private funding to incentivize landholders to undertake more sustainable land management. How units of biodiversity in these markets are measured and subsequently traded creates key challenges ecologically and economically because it determines whether environmental markets can ...

Recent tree diversity increase in NE Iberian forests following intense management release: A task for animal‐dispersed and drought‐tolerant species

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 5, Page 1029-1040, May 2024.
The main drivers influencing the passive increase in tree species diversity suggest a primary role of diminishing forest exploitation in this recovery process, fine‐tuned by climatic changes. This ecological scenario has particularly favoured animal‐dispersed tree species with higher drought tolerance, which mostly led the diversity increase.

Effects of human depopulation and warming climate on bird populations in Japan

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 2, April 2024.
Abstract Quantifying biodiversity trends in economically developed countries, where depopulation, associated secondary succession, and climate warming are ongoing, provides insights for global biodiversity conservation in the 21st century. However, few studies have assessed the impacts of secondary succession and climate warming on species’ population ...
