On the structures and quantification of recurrence plots

Physics Letters A, 2000
Abstract Recurrence plots (RPs) often have fascinating structures, especially when the embedding dimension is 1. We identify four basic patterns of a RP, namely, patterns along the main (45°) diagonal, patterns along the 135° diagonal, block-like structures, and square-like textures.

Multiscale recurrence quantification analysis of order recurrence plots

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2017
Abstract In this paper, we propose a new method of multiscale recurrence quantification analysis (MSRQA) to analyze the structure of order recurrence plots. The MSRQA is based on order patterns over a range of time scales. Compared with conventional recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), the MSRQA can show richer and more recognizable information ...

Symbolic recurrence plots to analyze dynamical systems

Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2018
This paper, based on the concept of symbolic correlation integral, introduces a set of symbolic recurrence plots and associated invariant measures, which are independent of the distance parameter, serving as a tool for quantifying the dynamic structure.

Conceptual Recurrence Plots: Revealing Patterns in Human Discourse

IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 2012
Human discourse contains a rich mixture of conceptual information. Visualization of the global and local patterns within this data stream is a complex and challenging problem. Recurrence plots are an information visualization technique that can reveal trends and features in complex time series data.

STATISTICAL TESTS FOR SERIAL DEPENDENCE AND LAMINARITY ON RECURRENCE PLOTS

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2011
Although recurrence quantification analysis provides useful information about underlying dynamics, it cannot be used to obtain significance levels on its own. Therefore, we propose methods to determine significance levels of serial dependence and laminarity from plotted patterns of recurrence plots.

Quantification analysis of fuzzy recurrence plots

Europhysics Letters, 2022
Abstract The method of fuzzy recurrence plots has been introduced as an extension of the method of recurrence plots to display recurrences of the reconstructed phase-space trajectories of dynamical systems as grayscale images. This paper presents some quantifiable measures of fuzzy recurrence plots in the context of the recurrence ...

Assessing Causality with Conditional Recurrence Plots [PDF]

open access: possible, 2021
In many fields of the natural sciences, from biology to physics, information tools are acquiring more and more importance. For the analysis of information transfer between time series in particular, the use of the transfer entropy is spreading. A typical application is synchronization experiments, which involve coupled quantities, a "target" and a ...

Recurrence Plots for the Analysis of Combustion Dynamics

2016
Practical applications involving combustion suffer from serious issues such as combustion instabilities and sudden loss of flame: flame flashback and blowout . These phenomena are related to dynamical changes in the combustion system. Here, we summarize our recent studies on the application of recurrence-based methods to identify such dynamical ...
