Coarse-graining time series data: Recurrence plot of recurrence plots and its application for music

Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2016
We propose a nonlinear time series method for characterizing two layers of regularity simultaneously. The key of the method is using the recurrence plots hierarchically, which allows us to preserve the underlying regularities behind the original time series. We demonstrate the proposed method with musical data.

Recurrence plots and unstable periodic orbits

Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2002
A recurrence plot is a two-dimensional visualization technique for sequential data. These plots are useful in that they bring out correlations at all scales in a manner that is obvious to the human eye, but their rich geometric structure can make them hard to interpret.

Recurrence plots of neuronal spike trains

Biological Cybernetics, 1993
The recently developed qualitative method of diagnosis of dynamical systems-recurrence plots-has been applied to the analysis of dynamics of neuronal spike trains recorded from cerebellum and red nucleus of anesthetized cats. Recurrence plots revealed robust and common changes in the similarity structure of interspike interval sequences as well as ...

ANALYTICAL DESCRIPTION OF RECURRENCE PLOTS OF DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS WITH NONTRIVIAL RECURRENCES

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2007
In this paper we study recurrence plots (RPs) for the simplest example of nontrivial recurrences, namely in the case of a quasiperiodic motion. This case can be still studied analytically and constitutes a link between simple periodic and more complicated chaotic dynamics.

Automated Quantification of the Synchrogram by Recurrence Plot Analysis

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 2012
Recently, the concept of phase synchronization of two weakly coupled oscillators has raised a great research interest and has been applied to characterize synchronization phenomenon in physiological data. Phase synchronization of cardiorespiratory coupling is often studied by a synchrogram analysis, a graphical tool investigating the relationship ...

On the structures and quantification of recurrence plots

Physics Letters A, 2000
Abstract Recurrence plots (RPs) often have fascinating structures, especially when the embedding dimension is 1. We identify four basic patterns of a RP, namely, patterns along the main (45°) diagonal, patterns along the 135° diagonal, block-like structures, and square-like textures.

Reducing sojourn points from recurrence plots to improve transition detection: Application to fetal heart rate transitions

open access: yesComputers in Biology and Medicine, 2015
International audienceThe analysis of biomedical signals demonstrating complexity through recurrence plots is challenging. Quantification of recurrences is often biased by sojourn points that hide dynamic transitions.

Multiscale recurrence quantification analysis of order recurrence plots

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2017
Abstract In this paper, we propose a new method of multiscale recurrence quantification analysis (MSRQA) to analyze the structure of order recurrence plots. The MSRQA is based on order patterns over a range of time scales. Compared with conventional recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), the MSRQA can show richer and more recognizable information ...
