Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Enabling CO2 neutral metallurgy for ferrochromium production using bio-based reducing agents

open access: yesScientific Reports
The metallurgical industry is a major source of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. This study explores the replacement of fossil-reducing agents with potentially CO2-neutral bio-based reducing agents.

Leaching of rare earth elements with sulfuric acid from bastnasite ores / Выщелачивание редкоземельных металлов серной кислотой из пород, содержащих фторкарбонаты / Rastvaranje elemenata retkih zemalja sumpornom kiselinom iz ruda koje sadrže fluorokarbonatni mineral [PDF]

open access: yesVojnotehnički Glasnik, 2018
Dissolution of rare earth elements from bastnasite ores was studied using sulfuric acid at the atmospheric pressure. The one step strategy with sulfuric acid was studied further and the results showed that filtering difficulties do not happen for the ...

Titanium Impurity Control in V-Bearing Pig Iron Prepared via the Sodium Smelting of Vanadium–Titanium Magnetite

open access: yesMetals, 2023
The sodium smelting of vanadium–titanium magnetite (VTM) can realize a multi-component comprehensive utilization of VTM. To broaden the application of the vanadium-bearing pig iron produced through this process, it is imperative to maintain the titanium ...

The dirty man of Europe? Rubbish, recycling and consumption work in England [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
England has been described as 'the dirty man of Europe'. However, the country's household recycling rate has been steadily increasing in the last decade, achieving a recycling rate of 42 per cent in 2011/12 compared to just 12 per cent in 2001/2 (DEFRA ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

The Largest Environmental Movement: Recycling and Consumption Work in Sweden [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
By sorting their waste for recycling, Swedes are told that they are part of 'Sweden's largest environmental movement' (Avfall Sverige, 2008). Recycling in Sweden is understood as an environmental action by all parties within society (including consumers,

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Formation and application of hydrogen in non-ferrous metallurgy

open access: yesVojnotehnički Glasnik, 2023
Introduction/purpose: Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe (75 % by mass) and the lightest element (with a density of 0.00082 g/cm3) which consists of only one proton and one electron. Because of its presence in many different forms such

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...
