Curbside Recycling: Waste Resource or Waste of Resources? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
In this paper, we estimate the social net benefits of curbside recycling. Benefits are estimated using survey data on household willingness to pay (WTP) from over 4,000 households across 40 western U.S. cities. We calibrate WTP for hypothetical bias using an experimental design that contrasts stated and revealed preferences. Cost estimates are compiled

Multilayer Biobased Poly(ethylene furanoate)/Graphene Oxide Nanofibrous Membranes With Directional Water Transport for Efficient Microplastics Filtration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A self‐assembled multilayer biobased PEF/GO nanofibrous membrane was developed by electrospinning for efficient PLA microplastics (MPs) filtration. The membrane combines superhydrophilicity, directional water transport, mechanical robustness, and a synergistic size‐exclusion interception and electrostatic repulsion MPs separation mechanism, enabling ...

Acoustic emission characteristics and damage evolution of coal gasification slag-based geopolymer cement grouting materials

open access: yesMeitan kexue jishu
The accumulation of low-quality coal-based solid waste presentes a significant risk to ecological and environmental safety. The concealment of the efficacy and destruction process of coal-based solid waste grout is a concern.

Two‐Step Thermal Upcycling of Flexible Printed Circuit Board Waste Into Metallic Copper Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A two‐step thermal upcycling process converts flexible printed circuit board waste into high‐purity copper nanoparticles using polymer degradation and arc discharge. The synthesized nanoparticles exhibit controlled morphology and high metal purity.

The Cost of Reducing Municipal Solid Waste [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper explores public policies for reduction of municipal solid waste. We parameterize a simple model of waste disposal using supply and demand elasticities from the economics literature and 1990 prices and quantities of recyclable and recycled ...

Degradable Magnetic Composites from Recycled NdFeB Magnets for Soft Actuation and Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work presents a degradable soft magnetic composite made from recycled NdFeB particles embedded in a gelatin‐based organogel. The material is processed into magnetic sensors and soft robotic components, which can later be dissolved in a green solvent to recover NdFeB magnetic particles.

Analyzing Demand For Disposal And Recycling Services: A Systems Approach [PDF]

open access: yes
Pricing municipal solid waste (MSW) services using a flat fee offers no incentive to conserve on disposal. This has prompted the use of unit pricing schemes, which should reduce disposal in accordance with demand theory and encourage alternatives such as
