The development of the red giant branch. II - Astrophysical properties

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1990
Evolutionary sequences developed in another paper are used here to investigate the properties of the red giant branch (RGB) phase transition. Results are found for compositions in the range Y(MS) between 0.20 and 0.30 and Z between 0.004 and 0.04. The transition mass M(HeF) increases as either Y(MS) decreases or Z increases.

Mixed‐Phase TiO2 Nanotubes Enhance Ru Nanoparticle Activity for Hydrogen Evolution in pH‐Neutral Electrolytes

open access: yesAdvanced Energy and Sustainability Research, EarlyView.
Efficient water electrolysis in NaBr electrolyte is achieved using TiO2 nanotube supports decorated with Ru nanoparticles. A cooperative “job‐sharing” effect between the TiO2 proton‐storage support that provides protons to the Ru catalyst enhances hydrogen evolution, minimizes Ru demand and polarization losses, and delivers stable performance ...

Testing the Breakdown of the Asteroseismic Scaling Relations in Luminous Red Giants

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Nearly all cool, evolved stars are solar-like oscillators, and fundamental stellar properties can be inferred from these oscillations with asteroseismology.

Rapidly rotating red giants

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
Stellar oscillations give seismic information on the internal properties of stars. Red giants are targets of interest since they present mixed modes, wich behave as pressure modes in the convective envelope and as gravity modes in the radiative core ...

Synapsids and sensitivity: Broad survey of tetrapod trigeminal canal morphology supports an evolutionary trend of increasing facial tactile specialization in the mammal lineage

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The trigeminus nerve (cranial nerve V) is a large and significant conduit of sensory information from the face to the brain, with its three branches extending over the head to innervate a wide variety of integumentary sensory receptors, primarily tactile.

Non-radial oscillations in M-giant semi-regular variables: Stellar models and Kepler observations

open access: yes, 2014
The success of asteroseismology relies heavily on our ability to identify the frequency patterns of stellar oscillation modes. For stars like the Sun this is relatively easy because the mode frequencies follow a regular pattern described by a well ...

Washington Photometry of the Red Giant Branch in NGC 6388

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2007
We present Washington photometry of the giant branches of the relatively metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6388 and compare it with 47 Tuc. By examining the spatial distribution of stellar colors across the red giant branch and using spectroscopic data on several bright giants, we found that NGC 6388's center is affected by differential reddening of at ...

From armadillos to sloths: Patterns and variations in xenarthran coronary anatomy

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Species of the superorder Xenarthra play a vital ecological role in the Neotropics. Despite their evolutionary significance, anatomical studies on their coronary circulation remain scarce. This study investigated the coronary anatomy of 82 hearts from nine Xenarthra species across the Dasypodidae, Myrmecophagidae, and Bradypodidae.

Discovery of a Metal-poor Red Giant Star with the Highest Ultralithium Enhancement

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present the discovery of 2MASS J05241392−0336543 (hereafter J0524−0336), a very metal-poor ([Fe/H] = −2.43 ± 0.16), highly r -process-enhanced ([Eu/Fe] = +1.34 ± 0.10) Milky Way halo field red giant star, with an ultrahigh Li abundance of A (Li, 3D ...

Late‐Onset Spondylarthritis Presenting as Glucocorticoid‐Resistant Polymyalgia Rheumatica: A hitherto underappreciated entity where TNF or IL‐17 Blockade may have a Therapeutic Role

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, Accepted Article.
Background Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an age‐related inflammatory disease with shoulder‐hip girdle involvement. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reveals extracapsular/entheseal soft tissue involvements in both PMR and spondyloarthritis (SpA) with sacroiliac joint and peri‐entheseal spinal bone marrow oedema (BMO) being characteristic of SpA ...
