Chromosome‐Level Genome Assembly of the Loach Goby Rhyacichthys aspro Offers Insights Into Gobioidei Evolution

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 25, Issue 7, October 2025.
ABSTRACT The percomorph fish clade Gobioidei is a suborder that comprises over 2200 species distributed in nearly all aquatic habitats. To understand the genetics underlying their species diversification, we sequenced and annotated the genome of the loach goby, Rhyacichthys aspro, an early‐diverging group, and compared it with nine additional Gobioidei

Linkage Mapping vs. Association: A Comparison of Two RADseq‐Based Approaches to Identify Markers for Homomorphic Sex Chromosomes in Large Genomes

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 25, Issue 7, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Reliable tools for the identification of genetic sex are invaluable in many fields of biology, but their design requires knowledge of sex‐linked sequences, which is lacking in many taxa. Restriction‐site‐associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) is widely used to identify sex‐linked markers, but multiple distinct strategies are employed, and it is ...

New perspectives on body size and shape evolution in dinosaurs

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 5, Page 1829-1860, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Diversity in the body shapes and sizes of dinosaurs was foundational to their widespread success during the Mesozoic era. The ability to quantify body size and form reliably is therefore critical to the study of dinosaur biology and evolution.

Parasites Are Paramount: Vertical Trophic Positions of Parasitic Catfishes in a Tropical River Food Web

open access: yesEcology of Freshwater Fish, Volume 34, Issue 4, October 2025.
ABSTRACT The Neotropical catfish family Trichomycteridae contains parasitic fishes that include scale and mucus feeders (subfamily Stegophilinae) and blood feeders (i.e., ‘candirus’, subfamily Vandelliinae). The influence of parasitic catfishes on food web dynamics is unknown.

Viral Nervous Necrosis due to Betanodavirus: A Case Study in Pot‐Bellied Seahorses (Hippocampus abdominals)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 48, Issue 10, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Betanodaviruses, members of the Nodaviridae family, are the causative agents of viral nervous necrosis in fish, resulting in great economic losses worldwide. This is the first case study describing the detection and confirmation of viral nervous necrosis in pot‐bellied seahorses (Hippocampus abdominalis) in Australia.
