The resolved red giant branches of E/S0 galaxies [PDF]
Formation paradigms for massive galaxies have long centered around two antipodal hypotheses -- the monolithic-collapse and the accretion/merger scenarios. Empirical data on the stellar contents of galaxy halos is crucial in order to develop galaxy formation and assembly scenarios which have their root in observations, rather than in numerical ...

Li-rich red giant branch stars in the Galactic bulge [PDF]
Aims. We present Lithium abundance determination for a sample of K giant stars in the galactic bulge. The stars presented here a re the only 13 stars with detectable Lithium line (6767.18A) among∼400 stars for which we have spectra in this wavelength range, half of them in Baade’s Window (b =−4 ◦ ) and half in a field at b =−6 ◦ . Methods.

Wide-field and deep DECam multiband photometry, combined with HST data for the core of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808, allowed us to study the distribution of various stellar subpopulations and stars in different evolutionary phases out to the ...

Post-red-giant-branch Planetary Nebulae
Common envelope events have been associated with the formation of a planetary nebulae since its proposition more than forty five years ago. However, until recently there have been doubts as to whether a common envelope while the donor is ascending the red giant branch, rather than the subsequent asymptotic red giant branch, would result in a planetary ...

The analysis of isochrone fitting methods for red giant branch photometry, and tip red giant branch distance determination [PDF]
We consider the procedure of isochrone fitting and its application to the study of red giant branch (RGB) photometry in old stellar populations. This is extended to consider the problems introduced by the inclusion of lower-magnitude regions of the Colour Magnitude Diagram (CMD).

Metallicities of Globular Clusters m3 and m5 from VI CCD Photometry [PDF]
To derive the metallicities of M3 and M5, we used the shape of red giant branch, horizontal branch magnitude, and red giant branch bump on the (V - I) - V color magnitude diagrams.

DUST IS FORMING ALONG THE RED GIANT BRANCH OF 47 Tuc [PDF]
We present additional evidence that dust is really forming along the red giant branch (RGB) of 47 Tuc at luminosities ranging from above the horizontal branch to the RGB-tip (Origlia et al. 2007). The presence of dust had been inferred from an infrared excess in the (K-8) color, with K measured from high spatial resolution ground based near-IR ...

Investigating APOKASC Red Giant Stars with Abnormal Carbon-to-nitrogen Ratios
The success of galactic archeology and the reconstruction of the formation history of our Galaxy relies critically on precise ages for large populations of stars. For evolved stars in the red clump and red giant branch, the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio ([C/N]
