A novel method to count the red blood cells in thin blood films

open access: yes2011 IEEE International Symposium of Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), 2011
This paper describes a novel idea to identify the total number of red blood cells (RBCs) as well as their location in a Giemsa stained thin blood film image. This work is being undertaken as a part of developing an automated malaria parasite detection system by scanning a photograph of thin blood film in order to evaluate the parasitemia of the blood ...

Influence of hemolysis on nucleated red blood cells count

International Journal of Laboratory Hematology, 2023
AbstractIntroductionHemolysis is a common pre‐analytical factor that can influence test results. Here, we explored the influence of hemolysis on nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs) count and tried to illustrate the mechanisms underlying this interference.MethodsFrom July 2019 to June 2021, 20 preanalytical hemolytic peripheral blood (PB) samples from ...

Coincidence correction in red blood cell counting

Physics in Medicine and Biology, 1989
A method has been developed for accurate correction of red blood cell count for coincidence in aperture-impedance electronic blood cell counters. It is based on extrapolation of the slope of regression of the counts which are obtained with sequential dilutions of the samples.

A System for Counting Fetal and Maternal Red Blood Cells

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 2014
The Kleihauer-Betke (KB) test is the standard method for quantitating fetal-maternal hemorrhage in maternal care. In hospitals, the KB test is performed by a certified technologist to count a minimum of 2000 fetal and maternal red blood cells (RBCs) on a blood smear. Manual counting suffers from inherent inconsistency and unreliability.

The automatic counting of red blood cells

British Journal of Applied Physics, 1954
The paper considers automatic blood cell counting apparatus in which the cells are scanned by mechanical oscillation of a microscope stage. It is shown how errors can arise from various sources and how these errors may be minimized by use of suitable electronic circuits, by careful choice of parameters and by adopting a novel shape of scanning aperture.

Improved red blood cell counting in thin blood smears

2011 IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging: From Nano to Macro, 2011
Quantification of the extent of malaria parasite infection (parasitaemia) continues to rely on time-consuming manual microscopy of Giemsa-stained blood smears. We present an algorithm that counts red blood cells in thin blood smear images, the first step in the determination of malaria parasitaemia.

Neonatal nucleated red blood cell counts in twins

Journal of Perinatal Medicine, 2001
We counted nucleated red blood cells (NRBC) per 100 white blood cells (WBC) in the umbilical cord blood from 98 twins born to 49 women with uncomplicated twin pregnancies at > or = 34 weeks of gestation to better characterize NRBC in twins. Twelve women with monochorionic (MC) placentas and 37 with dichorionic (DC) placentas gave birth at 36.7 +/- .9 ...
