It is shown that a radiative envelope in which the Kramers opacity law holds cannot transport a luminosity larger than a critical value, and it is argued that the transition to red giant structure is triggered by the star's luminosity exceeding the critical value.

Harlow Shapley and Red Giant Stars [PDF]
In five papers written between 1951 and 1955 Shapley considers the topic of red giant stars and reddish variable stars in the Magellanic Clouds. These works coincide with Shapley's final year as Director at Harvard and the first years of his retirement which extended a full score of years before his death in 1972. They include the following: Magellanic

Why Do Low-Mass Stars Become Red Giants? [PDF]
AbstractWe revisit the problem of why stars become red giants. We modify the physics of a standard stellar evolution code in order to determine what does and what does not contribute to a star becoming a red giant. In particular, we have run tests to try to separate the effects of changes in the mean molecular weight and in the energy generation.

Background Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare disease defined by recurrent cartilaginous inflammation. Anti‐collagen II (anti‐Col2) antibodies have been proposed as a diagnostic biomarker for RP, but their performance characteristics are not well defined.

Probing the Deep End of the Milky Way with New Oscillating Kepler Giants
The Kepler mission has been a success in both exoplanet search and stellar physics studies. Red giants have actually been quite a highlight in the Kepler scene.

Sulfur and zinc abundances of red giant stars† [PDF]
Abstract Sulfur and zinc are chemically volatile elements, which play significant roles as depletion-free tracers in studying galactic chemical evolution. However, regarding red giants having evolved off the main sequence, reliable abundance determinations of S and Zn seem to be difficult, despite the several studies that have been ...

From a database of 170 pentagonal 2D materials, 4 candidates exhibiting altermagnetic ordering are screened. Furthermore, the spin‐splitting and unconventional boundary states in the pentagonal 2D altermagnetic monolayer MnS2 are investigated. A MnS2‐based altermagnetic tunneling junction is designed and, through ab initio quantum transport simulations,

Asteroseismology with TESS: Emergence of Dipole Mode Suppression from Subgiants?
Dipole mode suppression is an observed behavior of solar-like oscillations in evolved stars. This study aims to search for depressed dipole modes in giant stars using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and investigate when the ...

Electric control of magnetic tunnel junctions offers a path to drastically reduce the energy requirements of the device. Electric field control of magnetization can be realized in a multitude of ways. These mechanisms can be integrated into existing spintronic devices to further reduce the operational energy.
