Red Supergiants as Cosmic Abundance Probes

EAS Publications Series, 2013
The chemical abundances of galaxies provide key constraints to models of their formation and evolution. Unfortunately, the standard method of determining abundances, from the strong emission lines of Hii-regions, is well-known to be subject to large systematic errors, particularly at high metallicities.

Something about Red Supergiants

Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2019
AbstractI would like to present an overview of red supergiants (RSGs) in the Milky Way. There are only about 1400 objects listed as RSGs in the spectroscopic catalog by Skiff (2014); moreover, we are not sure yet about how they formed and where they formed.

Water masers in red supergiants

Astronomical & Astrophysical Transactions, 2006
Results of long-term monitoring of circumstellar water maser sources in red supergiants are reviewed. The observations were carried out in 1980–2006 on the RT-22 radio telescope at Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory. We discuss the results for the semiregular variable M-supergiant VX Sgr and non-variable M-supergiant IRC–10414.

Turbulent, steamy red supergiant winds

Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2007
AbstractRapidly-evolving red supergiants (RSG) lose half or more of their mass before ending their lives as supernovae. Masers allow us to study the mass loss from 4 nearby RSG in AU-scale detail using MERLIN and EVN/global VLBI. The water maser clouds are over-dense and over-magnetised with respect to the surrounding wind.

Red Supergiants and Post-Red Supergiants – the Evidence for High Mass Loss Events

EAS Publications Series, 2013
The complex circumstellar environments associated with several of the most luminous cool supergiants provide evidence for episodic high mass loss events. The origin of the high mass loss is not understood but circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that large scale surface activity and magnetic fields are responsible.

Atmospheric Motions in Red Supergiants

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1974
Radial velocities obtained from interferometric spectra of a alpha Ori, alpha Her, and alpha Sco have been analyzed to investigate expansion and other large-scale motions in their atmospheres. In alpha Ori evidence of such motions is found. They appear to be sporadic in time or position on the surface of the star.
