Overabundant deer and invasive plants drive widespread regeneration debt in eastern United States national parks

open access: yesEcological Applications, Volume 33, Issue 4, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Advanced regeneration, in the form of tree seedlings and saplings, is critical for ensuring the long‐term viability and resilience of forest ecosystems in the eastern United States. Lack of regeneration and/or compositional mismatch between regeneration and canopy layers, called regeneration debt, can lead to shifts in forest composition ...

Components of local adaptation and divergence in pollination efficacy in a coevolving species interaction

open access: yesEcology, Volume 104, Issue 6, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Selection leading to adaptation to interactions may generate rapid evolutionary feedbacks and drive diversification of species interactions. The challenge is to understand how the many traits of interacting species combine to shape local adaptation in ways directly or indirectly resulting in diversification.

Differences in Leaf Cuticle Structure and Efficacy among Eastern Redbud and Mexican Redbud Phenotypes [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Society for Horticultural Science, 1995
The objective of this study was to compare the structure and efficacy in terms of retarding cuticular transpiration of leaf cuticles from eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis L.) and dull-leaf and glossy-leaf Mexican redbud [Cercis canadensis var.

‘Ruby Falls’ and ‘Merlot’ Redbuds [PDF]

open access: yesHortScience, 2010
Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis L.) and Texas redbud [Cercis canadensis var. texensis (S. Watson) M. Hopkins] (Fabaceae Lindl. or Leguminosae Adans.) are popular landscape trees. Their moderate size, early spring flowering, and wide adaptability make them appropriate for many landscape uses. Numerous cultivars in a range of flower colors, leaf colors,

Nitrogen Nutrition of Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Horticulture, 2009
Abstract Containerized seedlings of eastern redbud were grown in a greenhouse for 10 weeks with nitrogen application rates (NARs) ranging from 0 to 300 mg·L−1. Seedlings fertilized with nitrogen (N) at 180 mg·L−1 had the greatest leaf area, leaf dry weight, and total plant dry weight.

Coordination of Growth, Chromosome Replication/Segregation, and Cell Division in E. coli

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
Bacterial cells growing in steady state maintain a 1:1:1 relationship between an appropriate mass increase, a round of DNA replication plus sister chromosome segregation, and cell division.

Macronutrient composition in pollen affects development and survival in wild bees

open access: yesPhysiological Entomology, EarlyView.
Small carpenter bees (Ceratina calcarata) were reared on diets formulated with black poplar and dandelion pollen, while closely monitoring developmental metrics, lipid content and survival. Macronutrient analyses on both pollen types revealed dandelion pollen contained lower levels of protein, essential amino acids and several fatty acids, which ...

Effects of Debris Flow Disturbance on Vegetation, Soils, and Topography in a Steep Landscape in Central Virginia

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract In August 1969, intense rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Camille triggered >150 debris flows in Fortune's Cove, a first‐order drainage basin in central Virginia. These debris flows reshaped the landscape by stripping colluvium and vegetation from hollows.

'Ace of Hearts' and 'Little Woody' Redbuds [PDF]

open access: yesHortScience, 2005
The eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis L.) (Fabaceae Lindl. or Leguminosae Adans.) is one of the fi rst trees to bloom in late winter to early spring. The heart-shaped leaves add to summer’s interest, and redbud is a good substitute for dogwood (Bridwell, 2003). Flowers are reddish-purple in bud, opening to a purplish-pink before leaves appear.
