Ecological effects of habitat complexity vary with intertidal elevation: Implications for seawall eco‐engineering

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, EarlyView.
Our results demonstrate that the addition of habitat complexity through eco‐engineering can promote key functional groups of algae and invertebrates on seawalls, but effects vary across tidal elevation gradients and with the type of complexity provided.

Drivers of kelp forest refugia during successive disturbance events

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
Cooler areas with localized upwelling acted as climate refugia during the increased ocean temperatures from the 2014–2016 marine heatwave, supporting nutrient‐rich environments and mitigating heat stress for kelp forests. However, these temperature refugia often did not spatially overlap with areas providing protection from grazing pressure, leaving ...

Tolerance of organisms composing an Arctic kelp community to ocean warming and marine heatwaves

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
These results suggest that Arctic kelp communities are fairly tolerant to warming and short‐term marine heatwaves, despite the few minor effects on photosynthesis by some of the kelp species. We note that the future response of kelp communities must account for the potential indirect effects of climate change, such as predation and competition, along ...

Perceptions of inclusion among parent members of school governing bodies in South Africa

open access: yesBritish Journal of Special Education, EarlyView.
Abstract School governing bodies (SGBs) are expected to be channels for democracy, equity and equality. The literature, however, suggests that SGBs in South Africa perpetuate apartheid‐era practices by excluding learners from schools. While a large volume of literature describes the important role parents play in implementing inclusion at schools ...

Immanent Critique in Political Education: Indoctrination or Emancipation?

open access: yesConstellations, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article assesses whether critical political education, which immanently criticizes society, is able to avoid the challenge of indoctrination. For this purpose, the article reconstructs premises of critical political education, contemporary theories of immanent critique, and criteria of indoctrination.
