Specialization boosts reef fish functional diversity
Nature Ecology & Evolution, 2018Rapid evolution of morphological variations is shown to be linked to positions of coral reef fishes at trophic-web extremes. This finding suggests that current fishing practices on coral reefs that target top predators and seaweed-grazing fishes may undermine the potential for future species diversification.

Competitive interactions, arising from the shared use of a limited resource, are among the most pervasive interactions among organisms. Small coral reef fishes make excellent subjects for ecological field experiments, and manipulations of resources and competitor density have produced significant insights into the biological mechanisms of competition ...

Bone lipids of Jamaican reef fishes
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 19881. Fourteen species from 12 different families of fish from the Jamaican coral reef environment were analyzed for bone lipid content and class. Acanthurus bahianus (Acanthuridae), the ocean surgeon, had 29.7% lipid (as per cent dry wt) in the neurocranium. 2. Eight species had 7.4-17.9% lipid in the neurocranium and include A.

The objective of this work is to catalog and document the biological diversity of reef fish species from the Brazilian coastline and associated oceanic and coastal islands. This was achieved through the development of an integrated database with information on taxonomy, geographic distribution, habitats, conservation status, genome sequences and ...
