Publisher Summary The chapter gives a detailed description of reference electrodes. The composition of a good reference electrode (RE) remains effectively constant, unvarying for the duration of an experiment. It provides a stable potential for controlled regulation of the working electrode (WE) potential. The reaction at the RE can be reversible.

Reference electrodes for voltammetry in acetonitrile
Analytica Chimica Acta, 1961The saturated calomel electrode is the reference electrode in aqueous polarographic studies. Such is not the case, however, with nonaqueous polarographic studies. In particular acetonitrile has been used as the solvent for many polarographic studies with just as many reference electrodes.

Reference Electrode for Ionic Liquids
Electroanalysis, 2006AbstractReference electrodes for room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) applications were constructed that have a known and reproducible potential versus the ferrocene/ferrocenium couple. They are based on reference electrodes of the first kind, Ag/Ag+ couple type, or of the second kind, based on Ag/AgCl in M+Cl−.

Application of Ion-Selective Electrodes as Reference Electrodes
Analytical Letters, 1979Abstract Reference electrodes limiting interfering effects of conventional reference electrodes on the measurement involving ion-selective electrodes have been developed. They are constructed of a plastic body with porous plug or sleeve junction. Solid state, low impedance, ion-selective electrodes (cupric, cadmium, fluoride) in the equilibrium of ...

Reference electrodes (concluded)
Journal of Chemical Education, 1974The discussion in this article is essentially limited to aqueous electrodes supplied as a separate item, not in combination with a sensing electrode. Whenever possible the author has attempted to give the reader an idea on how many different types and styles of electrodes each supplier offers.

All-Solid-State Reference Electrode with Heterogeneous Membrane.
Analytical Chemistry, 2017Novel reference electrodes with a solid contact coated by a heterogeneous polymer membrane are described. The electrodes are obtained using Ag nanoparticles, AgBr, KBr suspended in tetrahydrofuran solution of PVC and DOS and deposited on Ag substrate, or

The implementation of reference electrodes (RE) in lithium-ion battery cells represents a promising way to optimize fast-charging, evaluate the C-rate capability of new electrode materials, and monitor cell aging more precisely. However, their design and material choice are under debate.
