Multiple scattering of matter waves: an analytic model of the refractive index for atomic and molecular gases

open access: yes, 2010
We present an analytic model of the refractive index for matter waves propagating through atomic or molecular gases. The model, which combines a WKB treatment of the long range attraction with the Fraunhofer model treatment of the short range repulsion ...

Electronic Control System for Optimized Resonance Operation of Dielectric Elastomer Pumps through Self‐Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A powerful electronic control system enables a dielectric elastomer pump to operate at resonance, matching conventional pump performance. Using self‐sensing to reconstruct load pressure dynamically, the adaptive control adjusts resonance frequency accordingly.

Effective refractive index tensor for weak field gravity

open access: yes, 2004
Gravitational lensing in a weak but otherwise arbitrary gravitational field can be described in terms of a 3 x 3 tensor, the "effective refractive index".

Cell nuclei have lower refractive index and mass density than cytoplasm

open access: yesJournal of Biophotonics, 2016
Common perception regards the nucleus as a densely packed object with higher refractive index (RI) and mass density than the surrounding cytoplasm. Here, the volume of isolated nuclei is systematically varied by electrostatic and osmotic conditions as ...

Efficient and Scalable Radiative Cooling for Photovoltaics Using Solution‐Processable and Solar‐Transparent Mesoporous Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Graded refractive index (GRI) structures are prepared from the layer‐by‐layer spray coating of the mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles, showing high solar transparency and thermal emissivity. Under outdoor conditions, after 50 days, the GRI‐coated photovoltaics show on average 6.65 ± 1.48 °C lower than that of the non‐coated references, maintaining 80.9 ± 8 ...

BURIED WAVEGUIDE POLYMETHYLMETHACRYLATE MODELING FOR REFRACTIVE INDEX SENSOR APPLICATION USING FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

open access: yesSpektra: Jurnal Fisika dan Aplikasinya, 2019
The purpose of this study is to obtain the optimum buried waveguide structure through modeling for refractive index sensor applications. The waveguide cladding material used as Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The core cross-section size was 1 × 1 mm2. The

Gradient-index Solar Sail and its Optimal Orbital Control

open access: yes, 2019
Solar sails with the capability of generating a tangential radiation pressure at the sun-pointing attitude, such as refractive sails can provide more efficient methods for attitude and orbital control of sailcraft.

Global scale variability of the mineral dust long-wave refractive index: a new dataset of in situ measurements for climate modeling and remote sensing

open access: yes, 2016
. Modeling the interaction of dust with long-wave (LW) radiation is still a challenge because of the scarcity of information on the complex refractive index of dust from different source regions.

In‐Situ Growth of 2D MOFs as a Molecular Sieving Layer on SnS2 Nanoflakes for Realizing Ultraselective H2S Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 12, March 18, 2025.
The ultraselective H2S detection of the ZIF‐L/SnS2 heterostructure is demonstrated. The introduction of 2‐dimensional (2D) breathable ZIF‐L results in a substantial increase in H2S selectivity attributable to the molecular sieving effect, which impedes the permeation of gases with large kinetic diameters and high polarity.

Verification of a variational source condition for acoustic inverse medium scattering problems

open access: yes, 2015
This paper is concerned with the classical inverse scattering problem to recover the refractive index of a medium given near or far field measurements of scattered time-harmonic acoustic waves.
