Negative Refractive Index in Optics of Metal-Dielectric Composites
Specially designed metal-dielectric composites can have a negative refractive index in the optical range. Specifically, it is shown that arrays of single and paired nanorods can provide such negative refraction.

Packaging of Macroscopic Material Payloads: Needs, Challenges, Concepts, and Future Directions
This review introduces a unified framework that decomposes any macroscopic packaging system into the payload, packaging material, and packaging strategy and combines them into a conceptual packaging equation: packaging strategy = payload + packaging material.

Cure monitoring of a UV cured epoxy resin using a long period grating Mach- Zehnder interferometer [PDF]
A cascaded long period grating Mach-Zehnder interferometer is used to monitor the change in refractive index of a UV cured epoxy resin over a cure cycle.

Refractive-index gas thermometry [PDF]
The principles and techniques of primary refractive-index gas thermometry (RIGT) are reviewed. Absolute primary RIGT using microwave measurements of helium-filled quasispherical resonators has been implemented at the temperatures of the triple points of neon, oxygen, argon and water, with relative standard uncertainties ranging from 9.1 × 10-6 to 3.5 ×

The presented study focuses on the fracture behaviour of carbon‐bonded magnesia MgO–C refractories, where environmentally friendly fructose, collagen and lignin serve as temporary binding agents. The partial substitution of the source material with recycled MgO–C reduces the fracture resistance, which can be counteracted by the additional introduction ...

Four‐point bending tests are conducted in an argon atmosphere on commercial MgO‐C brick grades with and without MgO‐C recyclate from room temperature up to 1300 °C. No detrimental effect of the MgO‐C recyclates on bending strength is found. Instead, a decisive influence of the total carbon content is observed, with lower total carbon contents ...

Enhanced RadOptic sensitivity in intrinsic bulk InP
RadOptic detectors are a promising method to record MeV pulsed radiation for inertial confinement fusion diagnostics. Because of the low radiation-induced refractive index change sensitivity of semiconductors, these detectors have poor responses to MeV ...

Smartphone-Based Refractive Index Optosensing Platform Using a DVD Grating
A low-cost, smartphone-based optical diffraction grating refractometer is demonstrated. Its principle of operation is based on the dependence of the diffraction efficiency of a DVD grating on the surrounding refractive index.
