Numerical modelling of light propagation in surface plasmon resonance sensor with liquid crystal

open access: yesCondensed Matter Physics, 2018
The five-layer nanorod-mediated surface plasmon sensor with inhomogeneous liquid crystal layer was theoretically investigated. The reflectance as the function of the incident angle was calculated at different voltages applied to the liquid crystal (LC ...

Characterizing the tunable refractive index of vanadium dioxide

open access: yes, 2017
Vanadium dioxide undergoes a reversible metal-insulator phase change near 68°C. This transition is often recognized for its electronic properties; however, the concomitant change in optical properties is also attractive. One application is to exploit the

High‐Entropy Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta Multiphase Diboride with Deformation Resistance up to 2000 °C

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ceramics are brittle and strength decreases with temperature. The multiphase high‐entropy (Ti0.25Ta0.25Hf0.25Zr0.25)B2 with heterogeneity at the nano‐ and microscale demonstrates deformation resistance up to 2000 °C, with maximum bending strength at 1800 °C.

Measurements of Broadband Negative Index in Space-Coiling Acoustic Metamaterials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We report the experimental demonstration of broadband negative refractive index obtained in a labyrinthine acoustic metamaterial structure. Two different approaches were employed to prove the metamaterial negative index nature: one-dimensional extractions of effective parameters from reflection and transmission measurements, and two-dimensional prism ...

From Nature to Engineering: Mortar Volume and Interfacial Mechanics in Bioinspired Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural armors like nacre, this study explores how varying the volume fraction of the soft mortar layer impacts the interfacial strength and toughness of bioinspired ceramics. Experimental and computational analysis reveals that higher mortar volumes increase energy dissipation but reduce interfacial stiffness, offering insights for ...

Global scale variability of the mineral dust long-wave refractive index: a new dataset of in situ measurements for climate modeling and remote sensing

open access: yes, 2016
. Modeling the interaction of dust with long-wave (LW) radiation is still a challenge because of the scarcity of information on the complex refractive index of dust from different source regions.

Efficient and Scalable Radiative Cooling for Photovoltaics Using Solution‐Processable and Solar‐Transparent Mesoporous Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Graded refractive index (GRI) structures are prepared from the layer‐by‐layer spray coating of the mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles, showing high solar transparency and thermal emissivity. Under outdoor conditions, after 50 days, the GRI‐coated photovoltaics show on average 6.65 ± 1.48 °C lower than that of the non‐coated references, maintaining 80.9 ± 8 ...

Deveolpment and testing of a chemical sensor of micro-structured optic fiber for meassuring carbon dioxide concentrations

open access: yesTecnura, 2017
Objectives:  The present study focused on the development of a optic fiber sensor for carbon dioxide (CO2), the measuring of variations of the refractive index of a CO2 medium undergoing controlled changes of temperature and pressure, and comparing this ...

Self-Mixing Interferometer Based on Frequency Analysis Method for Accurate Refractive Index Measurement

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2016
A new method based on self-mixing interference (SMI) for refractive index measurement by means of simply frequency analysis is proposed. The optical phase shift is implemented by translating a transparent object through a motorized stage with a setting ...
