Tissue differentiation by refractive index using fiber optic displacement sensor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The optical properties can differentiate biological tissues. Refractive index (RI) is one of the optical parameters that can be used for the said purpose.

Integrating Vibrio natriegens for Photon Manipulation in Living Lighting Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Rationalization of genetic and material engineering tools has enabled the engineering of fluorescent Vibrio natriegens (V. natriegens) to fabricate straightforward, highly emissive and stable V. natriegens‐silicones color filters for the first red‐emitting bacteria‐hybrid light‐emitting diodes. This pinpoints V. natriegens as a high‐performance protein

3D Anodic Alumina Nanoarchitectures: A Decade of Progress from Foundational Science to Functional Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Ordered three‐dimensional anodic aluminum oxide (3D‐AAO) nanoarchitectures with longitudinal and transverse pores enable architecture‐driven metamaterials. The review maps fabrication advances, including hybrid pulse anodization, and shows how 3D‐AAO templates tailor properties across magnetism, energy, catalysis, and sensing.

Tough, Ductile, and Strong Hard‐Soft Cementitious Composite Enabled by Multi‐Material Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Drawing inspiration from the layered hard‐soft architecture found in sea sponges, this work establishes a new framework for architected cementitious composites (ACC) through multi‐material additive manufacturing (MMAM) process. The integration of mortar and elastomer phases into layered architectures enables synergistic toughening mechanisms, including

Kretschmann-Based Optical Sensor via Thermally Tunable Refractive Index

open access: yes, 2021
This study discusses whether the prism used in a Kretschmann-based surface plasmon sensor can be fabricated from a thermotropic liquid crystal (TLC) material.

Ammonium Salts as Curing Agents to Obtain Ionic Epoxy Resins With a Thermoplastic‐to‐Thermoset Transition

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Ionic epoxy networks are prepared using ammonium salts as hardeners, leading to a two‐stage curing process with a thermoplastic‐like intermediate. This uncommon behavior enables extrusion and fabrication of thermoplastic prepregs that can be cured into thermoset composites.

Etched multimode microfiber knot-type loop interferometer refractive index sensor

open access: yes, 2011
We propose a novel refractive index sensor based on multimode microfiber knot-type loop (NL) interferometer. The middle portion (similar to 5 cm) of a 15 cm long multimode fiber is etched in 48% hydrofluoric acid to reduce its diameter to similar to 12 ...
