An ethnography of joy: Entrepreneurship among Latinx communities in East Los Angeles

open access: yesAmerican Anthropologist, Volume 126, Issue 4, Page 635-646, December 2024.
Abstract How do people living at the intersection of various forms of injury seek out collective experiences of joy? I explore this question through fieldwork with Latinx female and queer artists and entrepreneurs, some of them undocumented, who consciously seek out and enact joy in their communities in East Los Angeles.

The “Temporal Rift” and the Temporalities of the Capitalist Social Metabolism

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 56, Issue 6, Page 2412-2432, November 2024.

Contrary to pre‐capitalist societies, as the collective mediation of the social metabolism adopts a capitalist form, it ...

Land use history and landscape forest cover determine tropical forest recovery

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 10, Page 2365-2381, October 2024.
Both a higher land use intensity and fragmented forest landscape decreases the speed of forest recovery, indicating that human actions and landscape transformation shape the course of succession. Restoration in fragmented forest landscapes through natural regeneration is more suitable in areas with low previous land use intensity, higher forest ...

Avian phylogenetic and functional diversity are better conserved by land‐sparing than land‐sharing farming in lowland tropical forests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 10, Page 2497-2509, October 2024.
To minimise the loss of avian phylogenetic diversity and functional traits from farming in the Amazon, it is imperative to protect large blocks of undisturbed and regenerating forests. The intensification required within existing farmlands to make space for spared lands while meeting agricultural demand needs to be sustainable, avoiding long‐term ...
