Competitor Richness Outweighs Climate and Land Cover in Explaining Abundance Variation of a Neotropical Fruit Bat

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 51, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Understanding which processes regulate spatial variation in species abundance across their ranges is key in ecology. Species abundances may be affected by several factors, such as climate, elevation, land cover, species interactions and habitat protection status. However, few studies have focused on these effects synergistically across species

Mammals with large home ranges, low reproductive rates and small body sizes are most vulnerable to roads: A meta‐analysis

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 12, Page 3227-3239, December 2025.
Road mitigation for mammals should ideally be informed by site‐level knowledge and generally involve prioritizing species with the combination of larger home ranges, lower reproductive rates and smaller body sizes. To protect these vulnerable mammals from roads, we should maintain low road densities and instal small‐mesh mitigation fencing along roads.

River Barriers and Spatial Constraints: Unveiling the Factors Shaping Species Distribution in the Amazonian Rainforest

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim We aimed to quantify the relative contributions of geographic distance, environmental variation, and riverine barriers to shaping species distributions across the Amazon forest. Location Amazon forest, Brazil. Time Period Present. Major Taxa Studied Class Arachnida; Order: Opiliones (harvestmen).

Predicting disability pension risk among public‐sector employees in Finland: A new evaluation tool for employers

open access: yesInternational Social Security Review, Volume 78, Issue 4, Page 99-120, October/December 2025.
Abstract In this study, we use unique research data to investigate the risk of exit from the workforce on the grounds of the award of a disability pension under the statutory public‐sector pension scheme in Finland. Statistical analysis yields two indicators: the risk for permanent disability retirement and the critical duration of sickness absence ...

Claw growth rates in a subset of adult, indoor, domestic cats (Felis catus)

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 36, Issue 3, Page 362-367, June 2025.
Background – Keratinised tissues, such as nails and claws, accumulate hormones over time; the claws' hormone concentrations are being explored as potential biomarkers. Timelines for hormone deposition can be established if claw growth rates are known. Hormone concentration within cat claws has been recently evaluated, yet the growth rates of cat claws ...

When do citizen scientists record biodiversity? Non‐random temporal patterns of recording effort and associated factors

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 4, Page 860-870, April 2025.
Abstract Citizen science data are increasingly used for ecological research, biodiversity conservation and monitoring. However, these data often present significant analytical challenges due to uneven recording efforts by citizen scientists. Biases caused by intra‐annual differences in levels of recording activity can be particularly severe, hindering ...
