Who benefits from reducing the cost of formality? Quantile regression discontinuity analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper studies the effects of increasing formality via tax reduction and simplification schemes on micro-firm performance. It uses the 1997 Brazilian SIMPLES program.

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

How Reclamation Policy Shapes China’s Coastal Wetland Ecosystem Services

open access: yesSystems
China’s reclamation regulation policy is an important policy tool used by the government to balance land development and ecological protection in coastal areas, but few studies have focused on the impact of the implementation of this policy on ecosystem ...

Power calculations for regression-discontinuity designs

open access: yesThe Stata Journal, 2019
In this article, we introduce two commands, rdpow and rdsampsi, that conduct power calculations and survey sample selection when using local polynomial estimation and inference methods in regression-discontinuity designs.

Can Social Programs be Reliably Evaluated with NonExperimental Methods? Evidence on the Performance of Regression Discontinuity Design using PROGRESA data [PDF]

open access: yes
In 1997 a social program called PROGRESA was introduced in Mexico using a design for a randomized experiment. We exploit a build in, but neglected, discontinuity in the eligibility rule and use the quasi-experimental Regression-Discontinuity design in ...

An AI‐Enabled All‐In‐One Visual, Proximity, and Tactile Perception Multimodal Sensor

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Targeting integrated multimodal perception of robots, an AI‐enabled all‐in‐one multimodal sensor is proposed. This sensor is capable of perceiving three types of modalities, including vision, proximity, and tactility. By toggling an ultraviolet light and adjusting the camera focus, it switches smoothly between multiple perceptual modalities, enabling ...

Quantile Treatment Effects in the Regression Discontinuity Design [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper shows nonparametric identification of quantile treatment effects (QTE) in the regression discontinuity design (RDD) and proposes simple estimators.
