Evaluation of occupational health interventions using a randomized controlled trial: challenges and alternative research designs

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health, 2015
Occupational health researchers regularly conduct evaluative intervention research for which a randomized controlled trial (RCT) may not be the most appropriate design (eg, effects of policy measures, organizational interventions on work schedules). This

Nondestructive Testing of Welded Composite Metal Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
X‐ray computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate welded steel–steel composite metal foam (CMF) joints of two density classes. It reports variation in postweld spatial void distribution and correlates it to weld‐induced changes, mechanical performance, and failure within welded CMF panels.

Regression to the mean in regression discontinuity design: bias and sensitivity analysis

open access: yesJournal of Causal Inference
When making causal inferences from observational data, researchers must consider the effects of confounding. In a regression discontinuity design (RDD), individuals receive a treatment based on whether they score below or above a threshold value measured

Inverse Identification of Energy‐Dependent Laser Absorptivity in NiTi Laser Powder‐Bed Fusion via Calibrated Melt Pool Simulation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined experimental–computational framework identifies energy‐dependent laser absorptivity for NiTi in laser powder‐bed fusion, applicable to conduction and transition modes. Single‐track experiments and thermofluid smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations are coupled through inverse analysis of melt pool geometry.

Randomization Inference in the Regression Discontinuity Design: An Application to Party Advantages in the U.S. Senate

open access: yesJournal of Causal Inference, 2015
In the Regression Discontinuity (RD) design, units are assigned a treatment based on whether their value of an observed covariate is above or below a fixed cutoff.

Defect Evolution and Mechanical Performance of Fused Filament Fabrication‐Manufactured 17‐4PH Stainless Steel Revealed by X‐Ray Computed Tomography

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
X‐ray computed tomography reveals how process‐induced defects evolve from green to sintered states in Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF)‐manufactured 17‐4PH stainless steel. Internal porosity, weakest cross‐sections, and fracture locations show strong correlation with tensile performance, demonstrating the potential of computed tomography (CT)‐based ...

Relationship of Pure Tone Audiometry and Ossicular Discontinuity in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media

open access: yesPhilippine Journal of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, 2006
Background: Pure tone audiometry is routinely used to determine conductive and sensorineural hearing status. Ossicular discontinuity is usually assessed intra-operatively.

Another look at the regression discontinuity design [PDF]

open access: yesWorking Paper Series, 2003
The attractiveness of the Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) rests on its similarity to an experimental design. On the other hand, it is of limited applicability since rarely assignment to the treatment is based on known pre-program measures. Besides, it only allows to identify the mean impact on a very specific sub-population. Here we show that the

Stretching the Printability Metric in Direct‐Ink Writing with Highly Extensible Yield‐Stress Fluids

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces “drawability” as a new metric for assessing printability in direct‐ink writing, focusing on gap‐spanning performance and speed robustness. By designing yield‐stress fluids with high extensibility, we demonstrate that extensional strain‐to‐break significantly enhances printability.

Bayesian model averaging for nonparametric discontinuity design.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
Quasi-experimental research designs, such as regression discontinuity and interrupted time series, allow for causal inference in the absence of a randomized controlled trial, at the cost of additional assumptions.
