Analysis of unsymmetrical reinforced concrete double corbels

Unsymmetrical reinforced concrete double corbels have different shear spans (a) in each side. ACI 318-14 provisions allow the structural analysis and design of double corbels through either shear friction (SF) method or the Strut-and-Tie modeling (STM). The current study presents analysis procedure using both SF and STM.

Shear strength of reinforced concrete corbels

In this study, 15 reinforced concrete corbels with shear span-to-depth ratio greater than unity were tested. Test results indicate that the shear strength of corbels increases with increase in compressive strength of concrete, parameter of main reinforcement and parameter of vertical stirrups. Nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete corbel

Reinforced concrete corbels have been analysed using the nonlinear finite element method. An elasto-plastic-cracking constitutive formulation using Huber-Hencky-Mises yield surface augmented with a tension cut-off is employed. Smeared-fixed cracking with mesh-dependent strain softening is employed to obtain objective results.
