Τα REITs ξεκίνησαν τη δεκαετία του 1960 σε λίγες χώρες και σε περιορισμένη κλίμακα, γρήγορα όμως εξαπλώθηκαν και αναπτύχθηκαν. REITs, με την ονομασία ΑΕΕΑΠ, υπάρχουν και στην Ελλάδα.
