Bitumen rheology and the impact of rejuvenators
Construction and Building Materials, 2019Abstract Bitumen is a material used in many industrial applications. It is the primary binding material for road pavements in asphalt. To improve sustainability, it is important to be aware of the finite nature of conventional oil reserves. As a cost and energy saving material, reclaimed asphalt pavement can help preserve our resources. Virgin binder

Bitumen Rejuvenator Diffusion as Influenced by Ageing
Road Materials and Pavement Design, 2002ABSTRACT This paper describes studies to illuminate the process of mixing old and new binder during asphalt recycling, or, more precisely, mixing by diffusion. FTIR-ATR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy by Attenuated Total Reflectance) is used to study effects of the degree of ageing on the diffusion process.

Construction and Building Materials, 2020
Abstract Challenges are existing when applying high percentages of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) into construction as the aged RAP binder became more brittle, and stiffer after second-round usage. The bio-rejuvenator with dramatic environmental effects can alleviate stiffness and increases viscous components of aged RAP binder and is becoming ...

Characteristics of Waste Oil-rejuvenated RAP Bitumen: An Experimental Study
Jordan Journal of Civil Engineering, 2023In recent years, Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) has become very popular in pavement construction due to its benefits to the economy and the environment. The present study investigates the feasibility of employing Waste Cooking Oil (WCO) and Waste Engine Oil (WEO) as rejuvenators blended with reusable asphalt binder through physical and rheological ...

Impact of rejuvenators on aging properties of bitumen
Construction and Building Materials, 2015Abstract Potential reductions in construction costs and environmental emissions have made the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) as aggregates in hot bituminous mixes an attractive alternative to the highway agencies. Currently, there is a trend towards increasing the RAP content in asphalt pavements and recycle 100% RAP in asphalt mixes ...

Rheological aspects of the rejuvenation of aged bitumen
Rheologica Acta, 2006Rheological techniques are used to investigate the rejuvenation of aged bitumen. The thermal transition associated with the collapse of the compact structure constituted by asphaltene is determined by Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis. For aged bitumen, this transition shifts to a higher temperature but when rejuvenating agents are added, the ...

On the rejuvenator dosage optimization for aged SBS modified bitumen
Construction and Building Materials, 2021Abstract The rejuvenator dosage in bituminous binders is critical, as it has to be balanced to ensure the restoration of rheological properties without over-softening the recycled binders. In this study, the impact of dosage of different rejuvenators on a polymer modified bitumen was evaluated by conducting rheological tests at low, medium and high ...

Laboratory evaluation of rejuvenation effect of reactive rejuvenator on aged SBS modified bitumen
Materials and Structures, 2017A reactive rejuvenator (RR) containing epoxy functional groups and a conventional rejuvenator (CR) were used to regenerate the aged SBS modified bitumen (SBSMB). Effects of two kinds of rejuvenators on physical properties, rheological properties, chemical structure and phase morphology of the aged SBSMB were investigated.

Stability investigation of self-healing microcapsules containing rejuvenator for bitumen
Polymer Degradation and Stability, 2013Abstract Preservation and renovation bitumen of pavement is a big problem for the whole world. Traditionally, application rejuvenator is the only one method that can restore the original properties of the pavements. However, some puzzles still restrict its successful usage.

Application of FTIR-ATR to Characterization of Bitumen Rejuvenator Diffusion
Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, 2003Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy by attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) has been applied to laboratory studies of bitumen rejuvenator diffusion. Previous studies have given more indications rather than a real understanding of the mechanisms involved. FTIR-ATR can be performed in a relatively easy manner to provide diffusion measurements.
