Estimating Relative Density of Sandy Soils

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 2006
ABSTRACT The applicability of three previous empirical correlations proposed for estimating relative density of sandy soils based on the SPT N-value, effective overburden stress and soil gradation characteristics was investigated in the present study by using a data base of relative density obtained from high quality undisturbed samples of fine to ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Estimation of the Soil–Water Retention Curve from the Grain Size Distribution and Relative Density of Coarse-Grained Soils

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The soil–water retention curve (SWRC) is a fundamental property that governs the hydraulic and mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils. Laboratory SWRC determination remains time-consuming and costly, promoting indirect estimation methods.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Monotonic Behaviour and Physical Characteristics of Silty Sands with Kaolinite Clay

open access: yesGeotechnics
This study investigates the behaviour of dense silty sands with kaolinite clay under static drained/undrained conditions at low confining stress. Conventional laboratory tests assessed the mixtures’ physical properties, but standard void ratio methods ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Forest-mensurational characteristics of oak stands in recreational and health-improving forests of Left-Bank Ukraine

open access: yesНаукові праці Лісівничої академії наук України
Many scientific works of European and North American scientists are concerned with the study of recreational and health-improving forests. In Ukraine, a number of works have also focused on the study of these types of forest, in particular, in Ternopil ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Dolos Packing Density and Effect of Relative Block Density

open access: yesCoastal Engineering 1978, 1978
Accuracy and compatibility of measuring and testing techniques are discussed briefly and a plea is made for standardization to avoid, as far as possible, deviations in test results of different laboratories. One of the main causes of these differences is inconsistency in Dolos packing densities and corresponding layer thicknesses or shape factors.
