Sentience in cephalopod molluscs: an updated assessment

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article evaluates the evidence for sentience – the capacity to have feelings – in cephalopod molluscs: octopus, cuttlefish, squid, and nautilus. Our framework includes eight criteria, covering both whether the animal's nervous system could support sentience and whether their behaviour indicates sentience.

The myth of the metabolic baseline: sleep–wake cycles undermine a foundational assumption in organismal biology

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Basal and standard metabolic rate (BMR and SMR) are cornerstones of physiological ecology and are assumed to be relatively fixed intrinsic properties of organisms that represent the minimum energy required to sustain life. However, this assumption is conceptually flawed. Many core maintenance processes underlying SMR are temporally partitioned

Modeling Energy Consumption of Dual-Hop Relay Based MAC Protocols in Ad Hoc Networks

open access: yesEURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, 2009
Given that the next and current generation networks will coexist for a considerable period of time, it is important to improve the performance of existing networks.

Exploring Bankruptcy Attorneys' Experiences With Clients Exhibiting Suicidality: Challenges and Recommendations for Suicide Prevention

open access: yesBehavioral Sciences &the Law, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Bankruptcy and financial distress commonly precipitate suicidal crises, putting bankruptcy attorneys in potentially difficult situations with clients. This qualitative study explored attorneys' experiences with clients' risk for suicide and attorneys' recommendations for suicide prevention.

Recent Progress on Fullerene–Based Functional Materials for Energy Conversion

open access: yesCarbon Energy, EarlyView.
A schematic illustration summarizing the classification, and photo‐/electro‐‐/thermo‐catalysis and energy storage applications of C60 and derivatives. ABSTRACT Efficient energy conversion and environmental protection are still constrained by rapid carrier recombination, unstable interfaces, limited active site, and so on. Owing to the unique electronic

Functionalized Organic Lithium Salt Enables Flexible Solid‐State Electrolytes With Dual‐Ion Channels for Safe Li Metal Batteries

open access: yesCarbon Energy, EarlyView.
Here, we design a flexible and non‐flammable solid‐state electrolyte with hierarchical dual‐ion conductive channels. The engineered electrolyte combines continuous organic conductive‐phase pathways for fast bulk Li+ transport and dynamic polymer networks for interfacial ion hopping, achieving unprecedented room temperature conductivity (> 1 mS cm−1 ...
