Impact of Microgrid Operation on the Performance of Overcurrent Relay Coordination and Assessment of Differential Relay Coordination

Electric Power Components and Systems, 2020
Penetration of distributed generations (DGs) enable microgrid to operate in different mode such as grid-connected and islanded mode with radial and mesh topology.

Interactive relay coordination using microcomputer graphics

Electric Power Systems Research, 1981
Abstract A computer procedure is presented which enables the power system designer to interactively determine tap and time dial settings of overcurrent relays for the protection of industrial power systems. The user enters data about the power system, and a fault analysis is performed.

Time-Overcurrent Relay Coordination: A Review

International Journal of Emerging Electric Power Systems, 2005
When two protective apparatus installed in series have characteristics, which provide a specified operating sequence, they are said to be coordinated or selective. The coordination of directional overcurrent relays poses serious problems in the modern complex power system networks, which are interconnected.

Optimal Overcurrent Relay Coordination Scheme for Microgrid

2020 21st National Power Systems Conference (NPSC), 2020
The penetration of distributed generations (DGs) in the existing power distribution system imposes severe challenges to the existing protection schemes. The direction and magnitude of fault current vary significantly with microgrid operating conditions, which may affect the coordination among protective relays and lead to protection system failure ...

Overcurrent relay coordination by evolutionary programming

Electric Power Systems Research, 2000
Abstract This paper presents a novel optimization technique based on evolutionary programming for overcurrent (OC) relay coordination in ring fed distribution networks. Since the problem has multi-optimum points, ordinary mathematical based optimization techniques will fail.

Optimal coordination of directional overcurrent relays considering definite time backup relaying

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1999
A methodology is presented for the consideration of definite-time backup relays in the optimal coordination of directional overcurrent relays using linear programming. It is shown that the influence of considering second-zone distance relays and breaker failure relays impose important requirements for the determination of the time dial settings of ...

Enhanced Algorithms for Transmission Protective Relay Coordination

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1986
Algorithms employing sparse techniques for coordinating directional overcurrent and distance relays on transmission network are described with an example system. Analytical expressions are derived for determining the limiting values of settings for zones 2 and 3 of distance relays on systems with both two and three-terminal systems.

Evolutionary algorithm for protection relay setting coordination

PowerCon 2000. 2000 International Conference on Power System Technology. Proceedings (Cat. No.00EX409), 2002
The protection relay setting coordination manages the protection relay operations to clear a system fault in several steps of contingence. Relays which are mis-coordinated will trip out unnecessary circuits resulting in electric supply interruption. The time coordination method (TCM) which formulates the coordination of relay settings into a set of ...

Optimal overcurrent relay coordination in distribution system

2011 International Conference on Energy, Automation and Signal, 2011
Coordination of overcurrent relays in a meshed distribution system is a challenge task for the protection engineers. Initially it was done manually. Linear and non-linear programming optimizing techniques are very frequently used for Coordination of overcurrent relays.

Optimal coordination of directional overcurrent relays

2018
The coordination between DOCRs is nonlinear and highly constrained optimization problem in which two settings, namely, TDS and PCS of each relay are considered as decision variables. The main objective is to minimize the sum of OTs of all the primary relays, which are expected to operate in order to clear the faults of their corresponding zones.
