Data‐driven forecasting of ship motions in waves using machine learning and dynamic mode decomposition

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, EarlyView.
Summary Data‐driven forecasting of ship motions in waves is investigated through feedforward and recurrent neural networks as well as dynamic mode decomposition. The goal is to predict future ship motion variables based on past data collected on the field, using equation‐free approaches.

Bayesian Statistics: A Review and a Reminder for the Practicing Reliability Engineer [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
This paper introduces and reviews some of the principles and methods used in Bayesian reliability. It specifically discusses methods used in the analysis of success/no-success data and then reminds the reader of a simple Monte Carlo algorithm that can be used to calculate the posterior distribution of a system's reliability.

The designer of the 90's: A live demonstration [PDF]

open access: yes
A survey of design tools to be used by the aircraft designer is given. Structural reliability, maintainability, cost and predictability, and acoustics expert systems are discussed, as well as scheduling, drawing, engineering systems, sizing functions ...

Neural Network Adaptive Control With Long Short‐Term Memory

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this study, we propose a novel adaptive control architecture that provides dramatically better transient response performance compared to conventional adaptive control methods. This is accomplished by the synergistic employment of a traditional adaptive neural network (ANN) controller and a long short‐term memory (LSTM) network.

A Method and Model to Predict Initial Failure Rates [PDF]

open access: yes
It has long been well known that actual system reliability typically falls well short of early estimates. Failure rates are often ten or more times higher than anticipated. Many reasons have been given for this, but over-optimism is the fundamental cause

Hyperoxia Induced Alteration of Chromatin Structure in Human Bone Marrow Derived Primary Mesenchymal Stromal Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
Chromatin, which organizes DNA, changes its structure to adapt to stress like high oxygen levels (hyperoxia), which can damage cells. Researchers developed a technique to observe these changes and found variability in how different parts of chromatin remodel.
