t-REML for Robust Heteroscedastic Regression Analysis of Mitochondrial Power

Biometrics, 1993
The paper reports a long series of observations on two statistically independent variates which have different nonlinear regressions on the same parameter vector. In our analysis of the data, heteroscedasticity is handled by residual maximum likelihood, REML, but to cope with outliers as well, REML based on a t-specification, called t-REML, is ...

Comparison of REML and MINQUE for Estimated Variance Components and Predicted Random Effects

open access: yesOpen Journal of Statistics, 2016
Linear mixed model (LMM) approaches have been widely applied in many areas of research data analysis because they offer great flexibility for different data structures and linear model systems.

MIVQUE and REML Estimators of Variance Components under Proportionality Condition

Biometrical Journal, 1998
Summary: A one-way random effect model with unequal cell variances is considered, and the Minimum Variance Quadratic Unbiased Estimator (MIVQUE) and Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) estimator of the variance components are studied. The algebraic inversion of the variance matrix of the observation vector is obtained to achieve some computational ...

The use of REML in variety testing

1997
Variety testing is an important process in plant breeding. Every year new varieties enter and the others leave the field experiments on many different sites. This makes the data sets unbalanced and many problems can not be solved by the standard ANOVA procedure.

REML for Two-Dimensional P-Splines

We propose a new method based on residual (or restricted) maximum likelihood (REML) for P-splines. Existing methods use a transformation of P-splines to a mixed model; in the new model it is shown that a more direct method can be used keeping the sparse structure of P-splines. The method is illustrated with a two-dimensional example using the R-package

REML estimation of variance components and analysis of unbalanced designs

1993
Abstract This chapter describes the facilities for estimation of variance components and analysis of linear mixed models using the method of residual maximum likelihood (REML), sometimes also known as restricted maximum likelihood. The REML algorithm estimates the treatment effects and variance components in a linear mixed

Selecting the Best Linear Mixed Model Under REML

The American Statistician, 2006
Restricted maximum likelihood (REML) estimation of the parameters of the mixed model has become commonplace, even becoming the default option in many statistical software packages. However, a review of the literature indicates a need to update and clarify model selection techniques under REML, as ambiguities exist on the appropriateness of existing ...
