Validity and Reliability of the Heart Rate Matching Task: A Novel Measure of Heart Rate Estimation

open access: yesPsychophysiology, Volume 63, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Sensing and monitoring changes in our heart rate is a key aspect of interoception. We introduce and test the construct validity of the Heart Rate Matching task (HRM), a novel, fast and accessible task designed to assess the ability to estimate heart rate, in both remote (i.e., online) and in‐lab settings.

Remote photoplethysmography based on implicit living skin tissue segmentation [PDF]

open access: yes2016 23rd International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR), 2016
Region of interest selection is an essential part for remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) algorithms. Most of the time, face detection provided by a supervised learning of physical appearance features coupled with skin detection is used for region of interest selection.

High‐Performance Flexible Near‐Infrared Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes with a Heterogeneous Alloy Semitransparent Electrode

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 38, Issue 17, 20 March 2026.
This study presents a micro‐structured magnesium‐bismuth alloy electrode that enhances flexible NIR OLEDs. The electrode provides 40% broadband transmittance (400–1600 nm) and boosts light outcoupling efficiency (42.3%) and photoluminescence quantum yield (71.8%) through the Purcell effect in optical microcavities.

Fusion-Based Approach for Respiratory Rate Recognition From Facial Video Images

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
The respiratory rate is an important vital parameter that provides information about persons' physical condition. In clinical practice it is currently only monitored using contact-based techniques, which can have negative effects on patients.

Photoplethysmography for Measuring Cognitive Load in XR Environments: A Systematic Review

open access: yesAdvanced Sensor Research, Volume 5, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a low‐cost, low‐power biosensing technology with growing applications in education, particularly for monitoring cognitive load in eXtended Reality (XR) learning environments. Measuring cognitive load is critical for preventing overload and optimising immersive learning, yet existing approaches such as self‐reports

Monitoring of Tissue Perfusion During Arterial Occlusion With Remote Photoplethysmographic Imaging

open access: yesJournal of Biophotonics, Volume 19, Issue 3, March 2026.
This study evaluated remote photoplethysmography for tracking perfusion during arterial occlusion while assessing cuff pressure and placement. Similar local responses were observed across pressures and locations, supporting rPPG as a perfusion‐monitoring tool and establishing 150 mmHg lower‐arm occlusion as a standardized protocol.

Remote Monitoring With a Reusable Device Upon Implementation on a Surgical Department (REQUEST Trial)

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgery, Volume 50, Issue 3, Page 676-683, March 2026.
Continuous monitoring of vital signs using wearable devices may improve early detection of postoperative complications and reduce nursing workload. Evidence from real‐world clinical implementation remains limited. This study aimed to answer the question: Does the implementation of wearable monitoring in surgical wards reduce nursing workload and is it ...

LieRHRV system for remote lie detection using heart rate variability parameters

open access: yesScientific Reports
The standard polygraph, or lie detector, is limited by its reliance on average heart rate, subjective examiner interpretation, and the need for direct subject contact.
