This paper reviews the acute clinical assessment of these patients, outlines appropriate diagnostic strategies with labwork and imaging and updates the reader on conservative treatments, suitable choices for analgesia and indications for surgical intervention.

Acute flank pain is commonly caused by urolithiasis. This paper discusses advantages and disadvantages of procedures used for evaluation of acute flank pain. In our institution, the diagnostic algorithm includes ultrasonography and plain film radiog?raphy, and unenhanced spiral CT in equivocal cases. .
