Terroir and rootstock effects on leaf shape in California Central Valley vineyards

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 4, Page 1110-1122, July 2025.
The innumerable effects of terroir—including climate, soil, microbial environment, biotic interactions, and cultivation practice—collectively alter plant performance and production. A more direct agricultural intervention is grafting, in which genetically distinct shoot and root genotypes are surgically combined to create a chimera that alters shoot ...

The potential of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to improve soil organic carbon in agricultural ecosystems: A meta‐analytical approach

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 4, Page 1016-1030, April 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) in agroecosystems is a key objective for enhancing agricultural sustainability and mitigating climate change. Cacao grafting increases crop yield without compromising biodiversity

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 3, Page 579-592, March 2025.
Grafting is a successful approach for rejuvenating old, unproductive cacao trees, enhancing smallholder income opportunities and thus reducing pressure for new deforestation‐based plantations. Grafting briefly reduced arthropod abundance and diversity, but recovered in a short time.

Regional differences of functional and taxonomic bird diversity in tropical agroforests of Peru

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 6, Issue 6, June 2024.
We studied changes in the functional and taxonomic dissimilarity of bird communities in cacao agroforests and adjacent forests in two landscapes dominated by different forest types (dry tropical forest and subtropical rainforest). We found that the functional traits that are most vulnerable to disappear in agroforests at increasing distance from forest

Opportunities and challenges for strawberry cultivation in urban food production systems

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 6, Issue 3, Page 611-621, May 2024.
Cultivation of strawberry plants in urban production systems, whether in green open‐air spaces or under some form of protected horticulture such as vertical farming, has demonstrated to be challenging to new farmers and businesses. Commercial strawberry producers have an advanced understanding of strawberry plant physiology, enabling them to grow the ...
