The Floor‐Ceiling‐Chip, or 2 × 2D = Pseudo‐3D—Approaching 3D Cell Morphology and Organization between Two Opposing 2D Substrates with Cell‐Adhesive Protein Micropatterns

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Here, we present a novel 3D cell patterning and culture platform. The “Floor‐Ceiling‐Chip” (FC‐Chip) consists of two opposing track‐etched membranes, creating a pseudo‐3D microenvironment for the cells in between. By providing the membranes with micropatterned cell‐adhesive islands of varying geometries and sizes, the FC‐Chip enables control over cell ...

Efficacy of different insecticides and a repellent against the European pear sucker (Cacopsylla pyri) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The efficacy of different insecticides (neem, pyrethrin, spinosad, and rotenone) and a repellent (kaolin) applied with different strategies (single or repeated applications) against the over-wintering pear suckers (Cacopsylla pyri) and nymphs of the ...

A Modular Bioinstructive Platform Reveals Mechanistic Insights into Additive‐Free, Topography‐Driven Osteogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Engineered microparticle topographies direct human mesenchymal stem cell osteogenesis without biochemical additives. This osteogenic commitment is driven by canonical Hedgehog signaling and followed by temporal IGF‐II engagement. Two‐photon polymerization demonstrates spatial control, enabling the engineering of topographical gradients that pattern ...

Future semiochemical control of codling moth, Cydia pomonella

open access: yesFrontiers in Horticulture
Codling moth (CM), Cydia pomonella, is a significant pest of apple (Malus domestica) and other orchard crops worldwide, posing challenges due to the decrease in registered insecticides, rising resistance, and a changing climate.

Reducing the Incidence of Mammals on Public Highways Using Chemical Repellent

open access: yesThe Baltic Journal of Road and Bridge Engineering, 2012
In Lithuania, one of the measures to reduce the number of wildlife-vehicle accidents (WVA) is the fencing of highways. However, any gaps in the fencing have the potential to become an animal crossing site and consequently are likely to lead to increased ...

Self-healing of concrete cracks by the release of embedded water repellent agents and corrosion inhibitors to reduce the risk for reinforcement corrosion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
From the worldwide steel production, approximately 50 per cent is required to replace corroded steel [1]. In the case of reinforced concrete structures, corrosion of the reinforcement steel causes crack formation and spalling which leads to ...

Sprayable Polymer Blends With Short‐Chain Surface Segregation for Preventing Postoperative Abdominal Adhesions

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Adhesions’ high occurrence rates and high morbidity render them a critical challenge to be addressed. Current prevention methods, such as physical barriers, have many limitations, resulting in inconsistent safety and efficacy. This study demonstrates the potential for sprayable polymeric materials as an adhesion barrier.

Thermo‐Fluorescent Bactericidal Quantum Dots Based Smart Multifunctional Textiles via Molecular Surface Engineering and 3D‐Printed Interlocked Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A versatile approach is presented for fabricating smart multifunctional textiles by integrating thermo‐fluorescent carbon dot/polymer nanocomposite coatings with 3D‐printed interlocked architectures. The fabrics exhibit temperature‐responsive fluorescence, durable hydrophobicity, strong antibacterial and antioxidant activity, and enhanced UV protection.
