The word “syncretism” is a volatile one in Catholic theology – but an important one as well, especially when it comes to the Caribbean and surrounding areas, whose Catholicism is deeply intertwined with native traditions. Many in the universal Church look upon such mixtures as dubious at best, while others hold an inclusivist stance.
