The authors' tactical and technical contribution to this type of microsurgical replantation can be summarized in three main points: (1) direct sutures to the superficial temporal vessels, when these are undamaged, which simplifies the operation and makes it safer; (2) use of Kunlin's technique to make up for the great difference in diameter between the

A comparison of two fundamentally different techniques of multiple digit replantation is studied: a digit-by-digit versus structure-by-structure method. We conclude from this review that the structure-by-structure method is advantageous in terms of the shorter duration of the surgical procedure and possibly in terms of the survival rate of the ...

AbstractFrom January, 1963 to June, 1976, replantation of severed limbs and digits was performed in 438 patients at the Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital. The survival rate of replanted limbs was 83.2%, and 57.5% for replanted digits. Since 1973, the survival rate of replanted digits using microsurgery has been 92.3%.

During the period between 1976 and 1990, 207 fingertips have been replanted in 133 male and 55 female patients whose ages ranged from 14 months to 80 years, with an average of 32.7 years. Of the 207 fingers with complete amputation, 131 were injured in zone 1 and 76 in zone 2. The minimum follow-up period was 6 months.

The final judgment of whether to replant may not be determined until after microscopic inspection of vessels and nerves is complete. Once committed, it is ultimately the attention to detail that will determine function; bone shortening and rigid fixation, multiple strand flexor tendon repair, and quality, meticulous repair of the extensor mechanism to ...

The current concepts of replantation surgery, a procedure that has been practiced for half a century, can be discussed in terms of patients' demands and expectations, present indications for the procedure, available evidence that influences decision making, and technical refinements practiced to produce better outcomes.

Quantifying outcomes for leech therapy in digit revascularization and replantation
Journal of Hand Surgery (European Volume), 2019We retrospectively reviewed 201 digit replantations or revascularizations that were performed between August 2007 and June 2015. Leeching therapy was used in 48 digits and was more commonly required in replanted digits. In revascularized digits, leeching

A 14-year-old boy presented with oblique amputation of the heel through the calcaneum. The heel fragment was successfully replanted but the postoperative course was complicated by venous insufficiency requiring further venous anastomosis and attributed to tension in the skin closure.

Fingertip replantation is now an established technique. Although successful replantation is an ideal method for treatment of fingertip amputation, various other methods still are widely used and may be functionally acceptable. The indications for replantation to treat fingertip amputation is still controversial.
