Surface energy micropattern inheritance from mold to replica

open access: yes2014 IEEE 27th International Conference on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), 2014
We report a novel surface-energy patterning phenomenon, in which a novel polymer composition inherits the surface energy of the medium it is in contact with during polymerization. This surface property mimicking process occurs via spontaneous selective molecular alignment of hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers mixed into an off-stoichiometry thiol-ene

Influence of Sample Preparation and Processing Procedures on the Thermal Diffusivity of MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.

Replica-molded electro-optic polymer Mach–Zehnder modulator

open access: yesApplied Physics Letters, 2004
A Mach–Zehnder electro-optic polymer amplitude modulator is fabricated by a simple and high-throughput soft-stamp replica-molding technique. The modulator structure incorporates the highly nonlinear and stable chromophore, AJL8, doped in amorphous polycarbonate. Single-arm phase-retardation results in a halfwave voltage (Vπ) of 8.4V at 1600nm.

A Topology Optimization Framework for the Inverse Design of Nonlinear Mechanical Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work uses topology optimization to design unit cells for mechanical metamaterials with a prescribed nonlinear stress–strain response. The framework adds contact and postbuckling modeling to synthesize microstructures for three highly nonlinear responses, including pseudoductile behavior, monostable with snap‐through buckling, and bistable ...
