Angle of repose and internal friction

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1966
Abstract The relation between angle of repose and angle of internal friction in a fragmented mass is discussed, and experiments with crushed rocks are reported. It is concluded that the angle of repose is not generally the angle of internal friction of the material in the pile, but of the same material in a more closely packed condition.

Angles of repose, angles of shearing resistance and angles of talus slopes

Earth Surface Processes, 1977
Recent arguments that the straight parts of talus slopes stand, in general, at angles less than the angle of repose of the talus material are considered in relation to different test procedures used in the measurement of the repose angle. Observations on coarse, well sorted, angular fragments showed no significant difference between the values for this

ANGLE OF REPOSE: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY LIVELY APPLICATION PROJECT

PRIMUS, 2002
A mathematician and a geologist team up to write an interesting interdisciplinary statistics application. While primarily focusing on whether piles of debris composed of different grain sizes have different angles of repose, the project quickly blossomed into a lively study of experimental design and sensitivity analysis.

The Distribution of Angle-of-Repose Data

Journal of Geoscience Education, 1998
Disinterested physical geology students can be enticed into performing an experiment that takes them though the scientific method and utilizes math skills if offered extra credit. The experiment causes students to compare the angle of repose of different substances, by measuring the heights and diameters of individual piles.

Characterising Semi‐Cohesive Powders using angle of repose

Particle & Particle Systems Characterization, 1996
AbstractWhen properly measured and interpreted angle of repose (AOR) can be a useful method of characterising a powder. Unfortunately, a multitude of definitions and measuring equipment is used. A review of the inherent problems is presented in the first part of this paper. The second part of the paper describes the improvements made to a measuring ...

Angle of Repose of Snow on Solids

Nature, 1940
IT is well known that the friction of solids on snow surfaces is larger than on ice surfaces. The higher kinetic friction obtained on snow is attributed to the extra work done in displacing and compressing the snow crystals1. This may apply to the sliding of a ski or a sleigh on snow.

The angle of repose of potash pellets

Powder Technology, 1974
Abstract The angle of repose of a granular medium is shown not to be a unique property of the mateial, but rather to depend on the deposition and storage conditions of the medium. It may consequently be varied by varying these conditions. A knowledge of the angle of repose of potash pellets was required for purposes of intercontinental shipping of ...

ANGLE OF REPOSE AND ANGLE OF SLIDING FRICTION: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY

Geological Society of America Bulletin, 1945
Earlier studies of factors determining subaerial angles of repose of loose material have produced diverse results. In order to obtain dependable information for use in geomorphic investigations a controlled experimental study was undertaken. Results show that the angle of repose varies (1) inversely with size of fragments in perfectly sorted materials,
