The Origin of a Repose Angle: Kinetics of Rearrangements for Granular Materials

open access: yes, 2001
A microstructural theory of dense granular materials is presented, based on two main ideas. Firstly, that macroscopic shear results form activated local rearrangements at a mesoscopic scale. Secondly, that the update frequency of microscopic processes is

Structure–Function Decoupling of the Sensorimotor and Default Mode Networks in Black Americans With MS

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives Multiple sclerosis (MS) exhibits racially disparate rates of disease progression. Black people with MS (B‐PwMS) experience a more severe disease course than non‐Hispanic White people with MS (NHW‐PwMS). Here we investigated structural and functional connectivity as well as structure–function decoupling in the ...

Parameter Calibration for Simulation of Gentiana Seedling Substrate Based on Discrete Element Method

open access: yesBioResources, 2023
The physical and mechanical parameters of the rotten rice straw (RRS), rice husk biochar (RHB), and the mixture of the two materials (the substrate) were calibrated by Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken experiments to obtain the parameters for simulation of

Calibration and Verification of Discrete Element Parameters of Surface Soil in Camellia Oleifera Forest

open access: yesAgronomy
To analyze the interaction between the surface soil and the soil-contacting component (65 Mn) in the camellia oleifera forest planting area in Changsha City, Hunan, China, in this study, we conducted discrete element calibration using physical and ...

On the Shape of the Tail of a Two Dimensional Sand Pile

open access: yes, 1996
We study the shape of the tail of a heap of granular material. A simple theoretical argument shows that the tail adds a logarithmic correction to the slope given by the angle of repose. This expression is in good agreement with experiments.

Current Tracking Adaptive Control of Brushless DC Motors

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, EarlyView.
In this paper, the current tracking for Brushless Direct Current motors is approached considering uncertainty in the parameters of the motor's model. An adaptive control scheme to compensate electrical parameters uncertainty is proposed without requiring any knowledge of the mechanical parameters.

Determination of melon seed physical parameters and calibration of discrete element simulation parameters.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
To improve the accuracy of the Hami melon discrete element model, the parameters of the Hami melon seed discrete element model were calibrated by combining practical experiments and simulation tests. The basic physical parameters of Hami melon seeds were

Bistable Mechanisms 3D Printing for Mechanically Programmable Vibration Control

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a 3D‐printed bistable mechanism integrated into tuned mass dampers (TMDs) for mechanically adaptive passive vibration suppression. Through optimized geometry, the bistable design provides adaptable vibration reduction across a broad range of scenarios, achieving effective vibration mitigation without complex controls or external ...

Tailoring the frictional properties of granular media

open access: yes, 2011
A method of modifying the roughness of soda-lime glass spheres is presented, with the purpose of tuning inter-particle friction. The effect of chemical etching on the surface topography and the bulk frictional properties of grains is systematically ...

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.
