The importance of being relevant:Modulation of magnitude representations

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2013
The current study aims to answer two main questions. First, is there a difference between the representations of the numerical and the physical properties of visually presented numbers? Second, can the relevancy of the dimension change its representation?

Describing Mining Tailing Flocculation in Seawater by Population Balance Models: Effect of Mixing Intensity

open access: yesMetals, 2020
A population balance model (PBM) is used to describe flocculation of particle tailings in seawater at pH 8 for a range of mixing intensities. The size of the aggregates is represented by the mean chord length, determined by the focused beam reflectance ...

Dimensions of the irreducible representations of the symmetric and alternating group

open access: yes, 2016
We establish the existence of an irreducible representation of $A_n$ whose dimension does not occur as the dimension of an irreducible representation of $S_n$, and vice versa. This proves a conjecture by Tong-Viet.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

A Complete Neural Network-Based Representation of High-Dimension Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesMathematics
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are a highly used machine learning architecture in various fields. Typical descriptions of CNNs are based on low-dimension and tensor representations in the feature extraction part.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Representation dimension of exterior algebras

open access: yesInventiones mathematicae, 2006
The purpose of this paper is to provide the first known examples of finite-dimensional \(k\)-algebras \(A\) so that the value of Auslander's representation dimension of \(A\) can be any positive integer. Auslander defined the representation dimension of a \(k\)-algebra \(A\) as the infimum of the global dimension of the endomorphism algebra of ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
