Representations of Spaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We explain how the notion of homotopy colimits gives rise to that of mapping spaces, even in categories which are not simplicial. We apply the technique of model approximations and use elementary properties of the category of spaces to be able to ...

From Formulas to Functions through Geometry: A Path to Understanding Algebraic Computations

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Investigation in Health, Psychology and Education, 2021
The teaching of algebra at the secondary school level has faced a great revolution during the last 50 years. While previously, it was focused on technicisms and pure syntactic rules, the most modern trends recommend using a functional approach to algebra

Frequent Representations [PDF]

open access: yesMoscow Mathematical Journal, 2003
A unitary representation \(T\) of a finite group \(G\) is called `frequent' if the dimension of the variety of all representations which are unitarily equivalent to \(T\) is maximal (among all unitary representations of \(G\) in the same finite-dimensional complex space). For example, the fundamental representation of \(G\) in the space of functions on

Combinatorial representations

open access: yesJournal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 2013
This paper introduces combinatorial representations, which generalise the notion of linear representations of matroids. We show that any family of subsets of the same cardinality has a combinatorial representation via matrices. We then prove that any graph is representable over all alphabets of size larger than some number depending on the graph.

Worker representation

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2022
We define worker representation, identify the factors that determine demand for it among workers and employers, discuss difficulties in supplying worker representation, and reflect on the implications of worker representation for worker welfare and the behavior and performance of employers.

Loop Representations

open access: yes, 1993
The loop representation plays an important role in canonical quantum gravity because loop variables allow a natural treatment of the constraints. In these lectures we give an elementary introduction to (i) the relevant history of loops in knot theory and
