Sexing the history of Indian anti‐colonial internationalism: White women, Indian men and the politics of the personal

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
Abstract In contrast to the wealth of literature on the gendered and sexual politics of Indian nationalism, studies on the internationalisation of Indian anti‐colonial nationalism are rarely informed by the twin themes of gender and sexuality. As Indian activists traversed international political spaces in the early twentieth century, they frequently ...

Kräfte und Affekte : Überlegungen zum strukturellen Verhältnis von Musik und Bild in REQUIEM (Deutschland 2005, Hans-Christian Schmid) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010

Requiem

Requiem by Teresa Carmody is a "folk opera, a lament for the unexamined life," writes editor and author David Ulin in his Introduction. In this short collection of fiction, a lonely man plainchants for the waitress he once stalked, a sonless father serenades a fatherless son, and a bereft family gathers to bury a parent, providing an aching chorus of ...

Secularism, Gender and Masculinity in Nineteenth‐Century Cremation in Europe and the USA

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This essay explores, from transnational perspectives, the early history of modern cremation, which developed in the long nineteenth century with secularist connotations. I argue that the beginnings of modern cremation were shaped by bourgeois men who claimed certain identifiers for themselves in a gendering and Othering way.
