Expanding the frontiers of ageing research [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Ageing, 2006
With the first issue of the European Journal of Ageing (EJA) in 2006, the journal’s third volume, we want to share with you our satisfaction and gratitude about the state of the journal. In this age of electronic communication, while we are writing this editorial (January 31), already the first article of this issue can be viewed online at springerlink.

From Food to Power: Hydrogel Thermoelectrics for Ingestible Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We introduce a fully edible thermoelectric–electrochromic platform that harvests heat from food and converts it into a visible color change. N‐type and p‐type hydrogel thermoelectric generators connected in series power anthocyanin‐based electrochromic displays, demonstrating the feasibility of safe, biodegradable, ingestible systems for on‐food ...

Omnipolar Magnetic Field Detection by Superlattice‐Based Hall Sensor

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetic‐field‐induced electronic switching is demonstrated in unit‐cell‐engineered La0.7Sr0.3MnO3–BiFeO3 superlattices. Distinct substrate terminations modify magnetic and transport properties. Hall resistance measurements show omnipolar, hysteretic anomalous Hall switching above the Curie temperature, arising from Fe─Mn interfacial exchange, enabling

Inhibition of IL-1R1/MyD88 signalling promotes mesenchymal stem cell-driven tissue regeneration

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
TLR and IL-1R1 ligands are danger signals released following tissue injury and during the healing response. Here, the authors show that IL-1β signalling via IL-1R1/MyD88 inhibits the Akt/GSK-3β/β-catenin pathway in mesenchymal stem cells, which ...

Electrode and Microstructure Dependence of Oxygen Diffusion in Ferroelectric Hafnium Zirconium Oxide Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Significant nanoscale oxygen diffusion coefficient variations are measured in ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide films with grain boundaries and electrode interfaces exhibiting values 104 times larger than the grain cores. Overall coefficients are 10X larger for films prepared with metal nitride electrodes compared to refractory metals. New insights

Regularization of Nonparametric Frontier Estimators [PDF]

open access: yes
In production theory and efficiency analysis, we are interested in estimating the production frontier which is the locus of the maximal attainable level of an output (the production), given a set of inputs (the production factors).

Exciton Binding Energy of Phosphorescent Emitter Molecules in Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Energy level alignment is key to efficient OLED design, yet determining LUMO energies remains challenging. A methodology based on field‐induced dissociation and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations is presented to extract LUMO energies of iridium‐based phosphorescent emitters from their exciton binding energy.

Applications of Nanosheets in Frontier Cellular Research

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2018
Several types of nanosheets, such as graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) nanosheets, have been developed and applied in vitro in cellular research over the past decade.

Technology shape, distance to frontier, or frontier shift? Modeling the determinants of TFP growth [PDF]

open access: yes
We investigate the determinants of TFP growth of Italian manufacturing firms. Using stochastic frontier techniques, we consider three approaches to take into account the influence of external factors, i.e., the determinants of growth.
