The effect of specimen size on residual stresses in friction stir welded aluminum components [PDF]
S.445-450Friction stir welding (FSW) is a well-known technique which allows joining of metal parts without severe distortion. Because FSW involves less heat input relative to conventional welding, it may be assumed that cutting specimens from larger ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Determination of Residual Stress Distributions in Autofrettaged Thick Cylinders [PDF]
High pressure vessels such as gun barrels are autofrettaged in order to increase their operating pressure and fatigue life. Autofrettage causes plastic expansion of the inner section of the cylinder – setting up residual compressive stresses at the ...

The effect of residual stresses arising from laser shock peening on fatigue crack growth [PDF]
Residual stresses have in the past been introduced to manipulate growth rates and shapes of cracks under cyclic loads. Previously, the effectiveness of shot peening in retarding the rate of fatigue crack growth was experimentally studied.

Investigating transcription factor dynamics in health and disease using FRAP
FRAP analysis of GFP‐tagged transcription factors reveals how molecular mobility and target engagement change in response to drug treatment. By combining live‐cell imaging, quantitative model fitting, and statistical analysis, this approach uncovers transcription factor dynamics linked to disease mechanisms, providing a powerful framework for ...

Influence of residual stress on the stability of steel columns at elevated temperatures
Influence of residual stresses on the stability of steel columns with various sections at elevated temperatures has been studied. The potential effect of residual stresses on the stability of columns should be clarified, as the stability of compression ...

Residual Stresses Induced by Dry and Cryogenic Cooling during Machining of AZ31B Magnesium Alloy [PDF]
The major challenge of the Mg alloys has been their unsatisfactory corrosion resistance, which can be enhanced by improving the surface integrity. Cryogenic machining, where liquid nitrogen was used during machining, has been reported to improve the ...
